There's no such thing as "the good old days"

I get really annoyed when people say that the world is becoming a horrible place and it never used to be like this. What the heck? I feel like only fellow Americans say this, because they didn't know what it was like growing up in the 30's and 40's in Europe. Those were definitely not the "good old days." My grandmother is from England and she remembers being bombed every single night. So for her, the world is actually a better place now.

The world was never "good" as people say. There have always been wars, diseases, poverty, etc. These things never change. I just don't understand when people are so flabbergasted at the notion that the world is rapidly changing into this fiery hell it never used to be. Take a look at a history book and you'll see it wasn't all rosy and perfect. is it normal to feel this way?

    I don't think that's what they meant.

Times "were" easier back then in some contexts. Less to worry about I guess.

If i could relive the 90's when i was born, i would.

I don't think any generation has ever been totally perfect, especially not around the 30's and 40's. We can do more now, but there's a new law every day, some people are still miserable in parts of the world, and there's still war.
I can't say that I believe in the "good old days" either. We've evolved in medical fields and technology, but as far as this generation goes compared to the old days, we're still constantly afraid of weapon threats.
We're more advanced now, but we're not any worse or better than the old days.

These people don't seem to realise that they were the ones who raised us.

I think what they are referring to is back in the 50s and 60s like the "Leave it to Beaver" nuclear family where everyone was happy and got along. America was the leader of the free world and helped the rest of the globe rebuild, thus establishing itself as an international superpower. The economy was good, there was buying power with the dollar, and there was hardly any level of environmental destruction comparable to today. According to my grandfather, minimum wage back then was like getting paid $15 today in buying power. You could buy a new car for $2000 and got paid like $1 an hour. Now most new cars are $20,000 and minimum wage is only like $8 an hour. To adjust for the inflation, in today's money terms you would be making like $80 an hour. I do agree that people are being melodramatic sometimes about how bad things are, and I must admit I can't imagine living without Facebook and IIN :)

As time moves on, past memories become distorted. Good memories often seem a lot better then they actually were and bad memories either feel less important or forgotten entirely. Obviously this isn't true for everyone but it seems fairly true for a lot.

'Rose tinted spectacles'. It's easy to look back and just remember the good things. For most people in the world now is the best time to have ever lived.
