The word gay being used

I have always hated when people use the word 'gay' in a conversation or in everyday life situations. I feel that it is very insulting towards the gay community, and from what I hear the word 'gay' means dumb, stupid, lame, etc... I feel that It's not respectful. In an addition, I was babysitting these two kids who are ages 5 and 8, and they use that word. It just blew my mind. Is this normal?

I gotta tell you that your going to have to accept the fact that it is used all the the has nothing to do with someones sexuality. Louis CK does a great bit on it. Face it, not everything is about you.

You're gay for even asking this stupid question! You must be a raging homosexual yourself to be upset by the use of this word.

"Gay" is used when idiots can't think of something else negative to say.

Well being a gay man who says things are gay all the time I'll just tell you you should mind too much. I mean if people are using it in a way that is specifically to insult people who are gay then yeah take offense. But really, words are just words and they only have power if you give them the power.

Unlike most of us here, this guy here actually has a moral. Well,I have no morals, so I throw the word gay around. i don't care if i'm insulting someone or not. I'm glad to see someone who cares.

  • "I'm on honour roll and revived an award of excellence in English."Maybe you're right, but you can't even get your sentences in the right fragment. Don't get too full of yourself now. An award does not mean that you are better than everyone. Right? So don't act like it. Thanks!

  • I'm on honour roll and revived an award of excellence in English and I use gay all the time. I'm not proud of it but who really cares what other people say? Your life must be pretty easy if you are bothered by a single word.

  • I can't stand people who use it, even if they're using it as a substitute for dumb.

It's just disrespectful and there's plenty of other words that they could use.

I've never been physically hurt by a word no matter how loud or angrily it was shouted. I'm not going to censor anybody's language. Have you ever in your life insulted someone with words like stupid, fat, ugly, any word that was meant to hurt the feelings of the other person? If so congratulations you've lost permission on voicing your opinion.

An insult is an insult is an insult no matter how it came about or what it means.

    gay [gey]
    -adjective
    1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
    2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.

I used to use this word all the time describing the feeling I felt about something. Now, it means also something else. I've had to change the way I think.
So many words have changed their meaning.
I hope I didn't offend anyone. It's just that's the definition of the word I grew up with.

I don't like the term and I went to an all guy's catholic school where it was used on a minutely basis. Trust me, it's not that hard to break if you're committed.

I realize the evolution of language. However, 'gay' is still a term for homosexuals. 'Fag', 'homo', and 'queer' also have the 'dumb' definition assigned to them as well. Frankly, using the same words and pretending it's fine and just the change of language is worse than simply using it; you're linking the two meanings together and ultimately giving people associative cues for LGBTQ people. Free speech is all and great, but just know what you're saying.

Linguistically it can have MANY meanings. And words can evolve into different meanings overtime. Don't think it only means homosexuality... Because homosexuals named themselves that from the original word which meant happy. Maybe happy heterosexuals should have a problem with homosexuals using that word! See how stupid your logic is ?

Well my gay friend does not seem to mind it. Anytime someone uses it they say "Yeah I am" in the most flamboyant way possible. I think we should just change the word gay to mean "Idiot" as the official meaning. Make it where the word no longer means "Homosexual". I mean we changed it from meaning "Happy" to "Up the butt" and "Licking hay". So might not be that hard.

people do it with the word retard and the N word too. unfortunately these sayings have become part of my vocabulary. it's like a bad habit. when people around you do it, you tend to pick it up. we don't use those words to describe people. gay and retarded mean stupid and such. and the N word is used like asshole. it's not a good excure, but i suppose that's just what society has become.

retard is below IQ level though. So retard is an insult since they are saying you have a low IQ. Someone can have a low IQ but saying so is still considered insulting. Calling someone retarded/stupid is based on low IQ points. Meaning its somewhat accurate but not necessarily the same thing.
