The word fuck much more common today

Is it true that the word fuck is much more common today than ever before? I've read on several websites that the word is over 300 years old, but when I looked up fuck on another website, the timetable of word usage showed that saying fuck was much less common before the 1960s. And my grandparents, and almost everyone I'd know from their generation, rarely used the word. And when I was growing up in the 1980s, I almost never heard anyone beyond middle aged say the word, even though other kids and a lot of our parents sure did. I realize that tv and movies from before the 1960s wouldn't allow the word to be used, and I realize that that doesn't mean the word wasn't said in real life. But in pre code Hollywood films of the early 1930s, before they induced censorship, there were some pretty obscene things in those old films (not compared to today though), but I still never heard the word fuck. The truth for everything that I've seen and heard, is that it was really a much less common word back in the day. And when people did say fuck, they only used it referring to sex. Using the word as an adjective, adverb, etc. such as saying "the fucking car", or "this is fucking stupid", or "fuck off", or using it in other forms like motherfucker or fuckface, I do know that that has all developed since the 1960s. Before then, it was just used as in having sex with someone, fucking someone. And it was less common. I'm not saying it was unheard of, I'm just saying that the percentage of people that used it and how often they used it was much lower. What are some of your thoughts on this.

I think it's even older than 300 years. I'm sure I read somewhere that it came from a similar word in Norse, brought into Old English via Viking invasions of England. Might be wrong though

It might have taken on more meanings but I don't think it's any more widespread. It would probably still be considered inappropriate to say it in public and certainly at work. I think teenagers swear a lot to be "rebellious" but most grow out of it.

    • I disagree that it's not more widespread than it was before the 1960s, it's definitely gotten more widespread. And yes, it's taken more meanings. People never said motherfucker or "fuck you" in the 1950s, but the word would sometimes be used as sex then when saying things like "I fucked that woman" or "Do you want to fuck?", but it was only by certain classes of people. Yes, maybe the word might have existed for 300 or even 500 years, but there's a difference between a word existing and being commonplace.

I knew a girl who had a threesome with another girl and a guy, I think her name was Sharon Peters. The guy was Clyde Max. Lol.

With both my comments here, I just wanted to make sure I was thinking up names that wasn't used in Austin Powers, like Ivana Humphalot and Dixie Normous.
