The users who get the most love are ..?

I'm not trying be negative or mean to anyone in particular. I just want to know if anyone else has ever thought this.

You see users commenting about how great someone is. Then you see that great user commenting, and they're just being an asshole, not even funny, putting people down, just acting like a dick?

And it's like, why is this person so popular? "Its so great that your back", and everyone loves this person. And then you read what they write and their just a total dick?

It's just something I notice on here. Maybe people just get credit for being around for a long time and you shouldn't assume that means theres anything good about them?

is it normal to notice this?

btw, dont think i'm jealous, just confused.

Some people have respect for people who hold strong opinions, whether they actually share those opinions or not. I think I'd probably get more respect if I wasn't so wishy-washy, but I'm not going to pretend to be more sure of myself than I am just because people might take me more seriously. Sometimes I respond rationally, sometimes more emotionally, and other times a mixture of both. Some of my opinions are firm, but I'm also willing to change my mind if new evidence comes along. People don't always agree with me, but I don't aim to please, I aim to share and be honest with myself. Some people love this about me, and other people think I'm opinionated or odd.

Putting myself out there does open me up to a lot of criticism, but I think the times someone has been genuinely helped by what I've said are worth the bad bits. I'm never going to win any popularity contests because I don't pander, but if I can open a few minds or give some decent advice on my good days, that's all that matters I guess. If you do wanna be popular on here, I'd suggest you develop a "thing". Most people who're talked about a lot here have a sort of schtick.

I'm sure this doesn't help the OP, but I like it when you comment. :)

    • thanks for the answer! maybe your right about the strong opinion-holders getting more respect. But then again, nobody really likes gypsysailor...

I think it's pretty much the same here as in real life, at least real life circa junior high or high school: the ones who are the biggest jerks often tend to be the most popular.

    Then IRL people grow up.

IRL people grow up... until they stumble across a site called IIN. Then they revert back to their teenage years.

Its not that they are popular, they just validate the delusional worth of other morons. So said morons don't care that they are a dick because they make them feel better about their shitty attitudes. A good example is when people tell others that their religious views are wrong.

I've been here for years and am relatively unknown now. That being said, there was a point where I was at least a 6 on the popularity 1-10 scale and mainly it was when I spent a lot of time of this site, in the chatroom, posted more positive advice, trolled more (only a few users were aware of that and they'd even join in), debated quite a bit (usually in favor of the majority opinion, here) and just interacted with more people in general.

I've always been here for entertainment's sake. I talk a lot in real life and so it just kind of rolls over to here. I just don't have the time to be here nearly as often anymore.

At the risk of sounding like a fucking interweb hipster, if you need popularity to affirm anything here then you're just going to end up looking an feeling stupid.

I may not know you but I know your name quite well. Mote people probably dont know who I am and if they do, they probably associate me with being underage and inmature.

Haha, well, it's probably more because I hardly ever come on here but I don't quite recognize your name. Didn't assume that you were underage, I do not usually believe that about people if they can speak coherently here XD

I wouldn't consider you relatively unknown at all, even if you aren't here quite as much as you used to you're a nice enough person and a big enough personality that it doesn't matter

( pretty sure that's the first time I've used the term big personality in a good way )

Well thanks for letting me know! This isn't the kind of stuff I pay attention to but I've been here long enough and yeah, I sure as hell know you. I feel like we are just both regulars at this bar.

  • Thanks for the responses and the votes.
The reason is probably that finding a mutual friendship/connection on here is more important than whether or not the person is really that great.
if you've got someone who likes you, that's all that matters for most people.
There were a few dick responses, the obvious "yajussjealous" type.
Its hard to make an observation like this without people getting all butthurt... maybe they think the post was about them.
    Don't know, don't care.
But thanks for the majority of posters who thought about the question and thanks for the votes.

A couple of years of psychology classes might help you understand people a bit better, but I doubt it.
Even the most dedicated shrinks are only wandering blindly through the dark maze that is the human psyche.

    • no, I try and fly under the radar on here. I'm not really interested in random internet compliments from people who don't know me.
This is just a trend i notice on this site and from the votes, im not the only one.
