The term “mansplaining” is hurtful

Me and my buddy who is really into vintage clothing were at a bar and he complimented this girls shirt and excitingly shared a cool fact about the obscure television series that the shirt had depicted. She then said something to the tune of “thanks for mansplaining asshole!” And walked away. And it’s like... really? This seemed like such a shitty thing to say. To make it all the more outrageous, my friend is one of the most benevolent happy go lucky people I know, like he is the literal definition of someone who just has all around friendly positive and innocent “vibes”. She was being a total bitch right?

The phrase is so ignorant. I am always grateful to learn about something I don't know about from someone that knows something. I find myself explaining way more shit to men than I get explained to by men. Using identity to diminish someone's ideas or place yourself into some lesser-than-place is just gross.

But surely you realise mansplaining applies to men imparting information to women in a patronising demeaning way?

Sharing information or explaining in a genuinely egalitarian way isn't mansplaining

Ellena, People imparting information to people in a patronising way is just that. Attaching an identity in front of 'splaining creates a power and victimhood dynamic that is detrimental to traditionally marginalized classes. It is such a cop out for further discussion and actually amplifies the stereotypes that certain groups are less than.

I don't agree: mansplaining specifically refers to men patronising women and that's not victimizing women, using the term is an indication that women are onto this particular male game and aren't buying into it

PS: I guess it's possible men could be offended by women patronisingly explaining how to start the washing machine, sweep a floor, load the dishwasher or change a child's dirty pants and call that womansplaining .... EXCEPT I've noticed many men lose their supposedly superior intelligence when faced with any of these steretypically female tasks!

I can't see what she would get upset about to be honest. It's possible she took it as an insult that he assumed she didn't know about the tv series because she's a woman so he had to tell her about it ? But if he just shared a cool fact... I don't know. She was having a bad day I guess lol. The term itself isn't really hurtful though. Silly maybe, but there's definietely men who assume things need to be explained to women because we're not as smart. Terms like that do always get misused.

Mansplaining is a sexist term made up by feminists that hate men and think they are the root cause of problems. Here's a hint ladies, we can communicate directly and not have issues. Telepathy does not work.

You do realize I was being sarcastic OP. I said that as some people just assume I know about them when I first meet them. I can't read people right away.

that girl was being a bitch, that’s not what mansplaining is. mansplaining is when a man tries to explain something to a woman that she obviously knows or is common sense

“So if you were a man I wouldn’t have needed to explain it for you?”

Is the correct response, just lean into people’s crazy shit. If someone calls you sexist or racist or some triggered shit just agree and laugh at them. Those types don’t understand people who don’t get offended easily, it often leads to them having meltdowns in public if you’re lucky. So damned funny, I’ve caused a few. As I rightfully should have in response to their attitudes.

Sounds like a miserable person. Only an extremely unhappy and possibly mentally ill person would have such a bizarre reaction to someone trying to start a nice conversation with them about something they appear to be interested in.

I hope your friend isn't thinking he did anything wrong. There are just some REALLY assholish and unstable people in the world, who will not be happy no matter what anyone says or does. Her reaction is because of some sort of personal issue going on with her. I used to always wonder what it was I did wrong when people would get weird like this on me as well, and it took me entirely too long to realize that often times, the problem is with them (at least when you know for a fact you didn't do anything wrong, like just starting up a friendly conversation).
