The settler and the reacher

"In every relationship there's the settler and the reacher. Which one are you?
Every relationship has what “How I Met Your Mother” has dubbed a settler and a reacher. In other words, one person in the relationship settles for the other, who is involved in a relationship with someone out of his or her league, the settler."

Settler 5
Reacher 7

    • Go ahead and lie to yourself. You must be the reacher

first of all, i dont know what the "settler" and "reacher" means, but if it's what i think it means, then...

sorry but not everybody has a settler and reacher

Yup, you're definitely right. Even if looks are probably comparable there would still be subtle personality differences (or really large ones) that would lead to confirmation of your theory.

        Good job.

Neither. I feel that I'm on completely equal footing in my current relationship, which I'm sure is probably uncommon.

  • I'm not saying you're always a reacher or always a settler. It can change depending on the relationship.

Sometimes it changes during the relationship.

I had one relationship where she practically worshipped the ground I walked on (she was the reacher) but then after a year or so she turned all weird on me and I was reaching for her but she didn't want to settle.. we broke up.

I had to google that. A bit of an explanation would have been nice.

    Definitely reacher.

    • I thought about explaining it, but then it kind of seemed like you'd get it after thinking about it. Makes sense

Not really. Not everyone has seen that show, you know.

if its all settler and reacher then that sounds only like unhappy relationships lmao. if your in this type of relationship. hope your the reacher and not the settler cuz if your the reacher your going to be stuck forever knowing that you'll never be able to make the person your with truly happy and that one day someone else who she reaches for that reaches for her will probably steal her away from you. or you can be the settler and spend everyday regretting the decision you continue to make because you lacked the self confidence to go for what you actually wanted.

You're getting your logic from a television show... not sure how serious this thread is.

    • It makes sense. Where it comes from doesn't matter. I'm not saying the world is flat because of a cartoon. It's an observation that was shared on tv

This is a fantastic observation. The happiest relationships will always be between a man settling on a woman who is reaching for him.

Us guys have the luxury of romantic love without status being an issue. But until the pill was invented, women have been stuck with whoever they chose. Hardwired to desire higher status mates.

It's not always a case of settler and reacher.

Life and human beings are not that simple. Sometimes there are 2 reachers and sometimes 2 people settling for each other.

I have felt a little bit like both the settler and the reacher.
