The problem with representativeness on iin. what do you think?
I was reading some story on is it normal and caught myself committing a logical fallacy the other day.
The story itself doesn't really matter. It's the reactions of users that were interesting.
Only 7 people had commented on the story at that point. 2 of them were trolls or semi-trolls. The other 5 users, all of them transparently female, had expressed a very similar point of view. And I caught myself thinking: "Well, it must mean that most women feel that way about this situation."
But it does not necessarily mean that, right?
- We don't know how many female users had a different point of view and decided not to comment.
- We don't know how many users decided not to comment because they don't like controversy for example.
- We don't know how many female users weren't interested and didn't even read the story.
- And, probably the most important point, the female users on IIN, even if most of them did have this view, are not a representative sample/selection of women in this country, much less women all over the world.
Have you ever caught yourself committing this logical fallacy? I.e. have you ever considered the opinions of IINers to be representative of the views of humankind in general?
Yes, I have caught myself committing this logical fallacy. | 6
No, I haven't caught myself committing this logical fallacy. | 4
I don't think it is a fallacy. IINers do represent the world. | 2
