The "n" word.

I absolutely HATE it when I hear an African American person use the "n" word when referring to one of their friends. Why the hell can they say it about themselves, but whenever someone of a different race says it, they get offended? It doesn't make sense to me. It's not that I want to USE the word, it just makes me really angry.

Is it normal to be angry about this?

No such thing as being a non bi-racial "African American" lol all people with African ancestry in the U.S. are on average 20% European ancestry as well. We just use the 1 drop rule (1 drop of African blood = black, actually in South America they use an inverse 1 drop rule; 1 drop European blood = white lol so you'd all be considered white in South America) which is fucking stupid. I personally hate the term African American, it's a misnomer. Do I expect people to call me a European American? No. You're just an American who's skin happens to be brown, putting that separation up creates a psychological barrier of disunity. Anyways it was derived from the Latin word for Black "niger" then the Latin based languages all had variations "negro" "neger" "negar" all meaning the same "Black", I don't know why it was chosen to be offensive and the English black was not? There's no logical explanation. Which leads me to my final point; 99% of you are incredibly close to being legally retarded. And no it doesn't mean ignorant person. If it did I would say you are a nigger but you actually are an ignorant person so that would be inaccurate. ^____^ peace

It's like you and your mates. You know you can say to your mate "whats up (insert offensive word)!" and laugh and pat him on the back and he probably will laugh it off say "your an idiot" and won't be offended. but you wouldn't say that to someone who you don't to well or they would probably punch you in the nose! Same sort of thing with African Americans. it's alright to say it amongst each other. It becomes more offensive when other people use it.

I'm an African American girl and I don't use that word. It does offend me, whether someone of the same race uses it or someone else. But, of course, it is just a word, and you are only what you answer to.

For some reason though, it doesn't bother me when in literature or poetry. :D

I don't care if they call each other N's, it's kind of funny really. I call my best friend a cracker sometimes, but never in public lol. The only think I don't like is when blacks insist that it's "African American" not black. Well then don't call me white, I'm "European American". Roflcopter. But yeah it's normal to feel frustrated about such things. :P

to be allowed to use the N word, you must be involved in their relationships and lifestyle.
    And be black.
    It's normal enough.

Idk if it's normal to be angry about it but it is 100% normal to get kinda annoyed or wonder why they can and other races can't. The word doesn't even mean black person it means ignorant person, so if someone is white and ignorant then they are a ni**er, if someone is black and ignorant then they are too, that's 2 different Ni**ers of 2 different races, so anyone who has the balls to do it, go up to a black person and ask them.

Because they are dumb and like to sound it . Let them keep calling themselves that and speaking as if they have never heard the English language. They keep themselves down.

Because there is a Difference, White people put an ER at the end of the N word and Black people just use and A at the end.
I'm a white woman and it does not bother me at all.

Sure it's normal. And it's a well lamented topic among media sources @ some time or another, countrywide, for the last 3 or 4 decades. Countless books, news articles, blogs and facebook groups have arisen over this very debate.

But it's all nonsense. The ubiquitous N-word is here to stay, whether we want it to or not. However, it is up to YOU to help decide if this nonsense will continue to be either an outmoded, unnecessary thorn in society's side, doltishly sucking away our energy and concerns when betters of each await us, or - hopefully - in time, allow it to become just another retired, powerless artifact from a forgotten era within the ever expanding pop-culture lexicon.

You need remember, it is just a word. A mere word, and like so many others, simply a sound which has been ascribed a meaning. Language is a human creation, and as such, it is subject to our irrationality and abuse (but, sadly, not nearly as much as it is our gifts of expression and imagination). There's a sneak-circuit in all of this, however, and it is that language - our words - only carry meaning if we agree they do; which is to say, words only matter if we want them to matter.

It may be important to mention now that I am Biracial. Though, political correctness annoys and bores me, so I offer a variety of fun, tension-breaking alternatives: Halfrican, Quarter-Order, and a recent and personal favorite, "Illegro," which is short for "Illegal Negro." Growing up very much perched atop the divide of the racial fence, I found myself in a unique position to observe the often troublesome absurdity that is the personal experience of racial identity. And to that, I've witnessed how the 'black experience,' despite its rich and telling history which spans across entire continents, has been relegated to little more than a cross for all to bare, a la 'Roman Catholic Guilt;' and more commonly than that, if I'm critical, a hapless scapegoat. This is not to say that racism does not exist - it most certainly does - but as it concerns this N-word, it calls me to wonder, "why does this still word matter?"

Consider those who use this word, be it for endearment or just dyed in the wool malice. For those who have employed it commonly, it has about as much potency as 'dude,' or 'dogg' in the current familiar lexicon. Meanwhile, those who lob this word with intent to harm... honestly, have they nothing better? Nothing better to rely on than an obvious, top-of-mind hot button with which to stir, intimidate and demean? No, you see, these are weak people. People who found themselves unable to progress beyond their own past and predispositions. Though, that is their own problem. So do make it yours.

So I appreciate your annoyance @ the fact that this word is still used freely and loosely among whomever, and more so that should one publicly or openly challenge its continued presence in our culture, that question is often answered (typically by black folks) with a variety of furious and defen

I have narcolepsy.... Why do I keep hearing it on here?
And I don't have any African blood in me but I understand the concept when two people say the N word to each other and I can't to them.
I don't get how it upsets anyone.
