The difference between "your" and "you're"

I mean, how hard is it?

"Your" = belongs to you
"You're" = You are.

And then there's "there"
"There" - refers to a place
"Their" - belongs to them
"They're" - They are.

It's not difficult! And supposedly well educated people I work with still can't do this!

And while I'm ranting, why do people use the word "allot" when they mean "a lot". Just 'cos the spellchecker doesn't pick it up, doesn't mean it's the right word!

    Ugh, it drives me cray too. My ex boyfriend did it just to annoy me because I have major OCD about it.
    I'm like seriously? Go back to elementary school and learn how to use the English language.
    But, I just try to correct them over and over til they stop doing it because they know I'll correct them, people don't like being corrected.

    Well, it's less typing to do, and in the general flow of typing, it does actually make a difference.

    Also, it's not hard to actually figure out what they're talking about. I'm pretty sure that most people know thte correct way to use it. But, why bother when the audience knows what you're talking about anyway. Most people should know the correct way, and if they don't, then it's not like they can help it.

    Now, take a look at this sentece (I'll make it generic and positive to avoid flaming):
    Your much smarter than that other guy.
    Obviously, it's supposed to be "You're", but the reader should be able to understand the sentece anyway. It is for this reason that people don't really care when typing it out.

    It drives me crazy also. My boyfriend has horrible spelling & grammar. I think it's the laziness that gets to me more than anything. Aside from the ones that the original poster mention, one that gets me all the time is people who use "I" in place of "I'm" for example when typing or texting they type "I here" instead of "I'm here". And using "wut" or "wat" for "what" I mean really is the extra letter going to take that much time?

    I know what you mean, and I always use the correct form of the words you mentioned. I notice it when others use the wrong form of the word, but it doesn't bother me. I'm not a detail oriented type of person so I tend to see things in what I call "generic" terms. I can tell which word it should be by the context in which it's used, and as long as I know what they're trying to say it's OK with me.
    Personally, I have a problem differentiating the sounds when speaking or hearing some words. For example, pen and pin sound the same to me, as do Ingelman and Engelman, but people have corrected me for mispronouncing them. If I don't hear the difference I can't make them sound different when I speak them.
    As far as I'm concerned language isn't an exact science. It's a constantly evolving form of communicating. As long as we can exchange our thoughts and ideas that's the important thing.
    There's a place for people with your sense of propriety. Maybe you would make a good English teacher, or a proof reader in a publishing enterprise or law office. You're beating your head against a wall trying to correct people's language skills among the general population in everyday life.

    Well, most people know the difference, but when typing you're not really thinking about it, so it's an easy typo to make. I hate when people don't know the difference between women and woman.

    woman=singlular
    women=plural
    ...You should've learned that in 3rd grade, people!

    I'm the exact same way! It drives me up the wall! Most people who use the Internet ought to go back to elementary school and pay better attention to this stuff.

    This, among many, is one of the things that annoy me. It is not so much that they do not have good grammar skills, but the fact that they think they are using correct grammar. I cannot tell you how many times i have been "dissed, told off, corrected, etc.." via text message/email by people who think they have composed an intelligent message, but instead have blemished their response with incorrect grammar, thus making their effort ineffective.

      It's "people's" ja ; )

      For all the compliants, almost every post contains grammatical errors or errors in punctuation.

      Don't sweat the small stuff.

    i agree it is irritating, those dumb asses should type correctly so we wouldn't have to read it wrong. it is really annoying.

    It bothers me too. I try not to get hung up on it though. I think it's fine to post a new thread about this. I like it. However, it also bothers me when people use this as justification to flame other posters. People who make these mistakes (and many, many, many other mistakes) are not trying to be mean, so there's no reason to be mean to them. That's my opinion anyway.

    Have a nice day!

    I can understand why you'd be stressed about it in the workplace (though the allot thing sounds more like a typo than an actual inability to spell) but I wouldn't get too worried about it if I were you, it's their work they're making mistakes in not yours, and if you try to butt in on what they're doing they're probably going to get pissed off with you pretty quickly.
