The concept of bad words is strange

Why is "shit", for example, seen as so much worse than "crap" or "poop", when the words mean exactly the same thing?

The same goes for "fuck", which means "intercourse".

I understand why the words came to be seen as inappropriate, since their definitions are about uncomfortable topics.

Most people wouldn't want to talk about having sex, pooping, going to hell, or being damned at a pleasant and civil dinner.

Connotation by nature can be arbitrary, but I think it crossed over into ridiculousness when certain synonyms actually became "immoral" to say.

Go engage in intercourse with yourself, you reusable water-tight sack filled with a vaginal wash.

Some words are like fine china, they should be reserved for special occasions and honored guests.

What about the worst word of all? The n word has become so powerful.

Not saying people should be calling anyone that, but at the end of the day it is still but a word. I think it matters more how you treat someone, and what the context is.

Used to offend people, and sound vulgar. It was made to be offensive, and rude to people and it sounds kind of unappealing than saying the average synonym.

It was a concept made in ancient or old times when religion was a major part of life. Now since religion has separated into multiple branches and not as important it's not a big sin or "No". Just a no to society

I guess another reason is that its informal to some people or cultures. Its not as formal or direct as saying "having sex" especially to those new to the language, etc

One story holds that cuss words were actually invented by the first people who ever stubbed their toes on a table leg in the dark.
At least the ones who were not so pissed off they became vapor-locked and could not even say a coherent cuss word.

Today they are needed so people have a reason to be offended.
Also think of the cuss words in your favorite music. If replaced by nice words, the song would not be the same.
Like the song "Irresponsible hate anthem". What if the chorus part said, "Dang it! Dang it! Dang it! Dang... it!"
