Not always, but often, I've noticed that when someone makes a well thought out, intelligent, well written post, it tends to sit. No replies, no thumbs up...nothing.

At the top of the thread, most votes and responses go to the insincere, cheesy cliché. The smartass with a one-liner that's usually lame and predictable.

I love a good, off handed remark if it's well thought out and original, but that's seldom it. is it normal users pride themselves on above average intelligence, but to an outsider coming in and reading, it wouldn't appear so.

    Well i posted a similar question and the usual people started throwing stupid insults and thumbed down my comments... too bad the rest of iin users are smart and agreed its normal..

    Several reasons:

    1) One-liners are faster to write, so they get posted quicker. If they get posted quicker more people see them so they get more potential thumbs up.

    2) Longer comments have more in them that people might disagree with, whereas and off-hand one-liner is usually either funny or neutral so is more likely to receive thumbs.

    3) Trolls. If you troll, you thumb down a comment that someone put a lot of work into (i.e. a long comment, not a short joke) because that causes most havoc.

    4) Look at the YouTube top comments. Look at the IIN top comments. Do you honestly think the ones on IIN are worse? Because I have to disagree. At least IIN isn't the home of recycled memes like many sites are.

    5) Not all stories on IIN warrant a serious reply. Some stories are made in fun, so the comments are made in fun too.

    6) Well-thumbsed comments tend to stay at the top because there's a snowball effect. After a while, people just want to see how high the number can go. So if a short comment gets only a few thumbs up, it will likely get more to keep it at the top.

    7) There might be no replies because no-one has anything to add to the long comments.

    8) If a comment takes a lot of effort to write, someone who wants to reply to it will want to put in a similar amount of effort to justify replying. The greater to required effort, the fewer people willing to put that effort in.

    9) I have to disagree with your premise. Whenever I put serious thought into a comment, it tends to get a reply or two. Even if that reply is from the OP, not a fellow commenter.

    10) Maybe you're just a cynic, because I think there's loads of genuinely hilarious people here not not much inanity. The inane stuff certainly rarely gets many thumbs up.

    There are more reasons too, I'm sure. That's just what was off the top of my head.

      It's interesting looking back on this, and the answers I got.

      I'd agree, at least in part with points #1,3, 5, 6, and 8.

      Points #2, 6, and 7 reference length. Nowhere in my question mentioned length. To quote myself, "a well thought out, intelligent, well written post." That can be short or lengthy.

      As for #4, Youtube comments epitomize the degradation of society. That site is riddled with insulting, hurtful, and dispassionate commentary from people who care less about others feelings than their own popularity. Though I don't believe that IIN is quite that bad, comparing this site to Youtube proves my point.

      As for #9, from experience, sometimes, but not often. You appear to be part of the popular clique, so your experience will reflect that. You may deny that, but that's my observation.

      #10, I agree that there are many genuinely hilarious people here, with funny one-liners that really make me laugh, but that isn't whom I was referring to. That's why I said, "insincere, cheesy cliché, the smartass with a one-liner that's usually lame and predictable," and, my opener, "not always, but often."
      I'm cynical of Youtube, but not of IIN. Critical maybe...including of myself. I'm far less than perfect. I just wanted to point out this observation.

        I think that a large proportion of long comments are thoughtful since it's quite hard to waffle for hours and say nothing thoughtful (although of course exceptions exist :P). In any case, since it seems like I was using the terms interchangeably you can replace "long" with "thoughtful" if that makes more sense.

        Maybe I am part of a popular cliche, but it isn't something I honestly feel. Maybe my observations aren't accurate, but it seems like the most thoughtful comments do get recognition even if the commenter is someone I've never seen before. Maybe not so much anymore, because there's less of a tight community now and people talk to each other less overall. Maybe, maybe, maybe.

        I think often is still definitely an overstatement since I think a vast majority of humour on this site doesn't fall under that category, which is why I thought you sounded cynical. That's just my personal taste though. Nothing can be funny to everyone.

    Yeah, you're right. I feel kinda dumb for even joining this site now. I'm gonna stay though, especially if I can give some kind of comfort or encouragement to someone who needs it here. Plus it's fun being able to dive into someone's thoughts, or find someone you've got something very personal in common with. Having someone who relates to you feels pretty good. When I came here I was sorta hoping that I'd gain a friend, because even though I have loved ones all around me, they won't understand me as much as that distant friend could.

    Yeah I get mushy every now and then, go easy on me.

    I think there's some laziness to go along with that. I mean I'm not going to lie I often do not want to get into a philosophical debate, especially over something that I don't really care about, like if God is real or is Satan actually good.
