The "baddies"

The whole "Good must triumph over evil" thing has begun to really piss me off in the entertainment industry.

Its become utterly ridiculous, no matter what amount of peril the the good guys are in, they just ALWAYS seem to make it out. Just once I want to see the bad guys win. And by this, I don't mean these serial rapists and murderers and stuff, I mean the smart bad guys who put in ALOT of planning before they act.

Does anyone else want to see the bad guys win for a change?

Definitely, I like Harry Potter, but there are times in the movie when I want Voldemort to jump out from behind a bush and kill him. He's so whiney and annoying.

    • Thats exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about dude. Harry should have been killed, or at least maimed in some way.

I watched Inglorious Bastards the other day and I got so upset when that main Nazi dude let them go. He had them By The Balls and he could have just killed them :/

  • Yes and no. For movies like Batman, if the joker would kill batman, they would pretty much stop it there. Since Batman is alive, they can continue making movies of him.

For random movies that will never have a sequel, I wouldn't mind if the bad guys won whatever there is to win.

I hate it too. Why can't The villains ever win?!

Maybe movies should change with real life once in a while?

In movies (and most other fiction) the good guys win.

In real life, the bad guys win.

Maybe the good guys are sick of losing, so the movies make them the winners?

How about Sweeney Todd? By the time the movie's over, nobody wins.

Also American Psycho. I know you said no murderers or rapists but EVERYONE should see this movie. It's GREAT

Well think of Gladiator. Sure, he kills the bad emperor in the end, but only after his kid was killed, his wife raped and mudered, his estate burnt down, he was stripped of his title and a few of his friends died...not to mention he dies in the end...that doesn't really sound like winning

I am more ticked by all the recipe movies out there. I don't care who wins but I do want to enjoy the trip and most movies just follow the exact same recipe.

life sucks, gets better, gets good, sucks again and then for the win.

I'd do with the good ending as it's nice to see the hero win but cook us a patch with a different trail once in a while.

    Swordfish?

It's modern and it still counts as a blockbuster. And these are smart guys with planning.

"villainy will win" Is not a common theme but it's out there. Just need to look a little harder.

  • Agreed with OP, I just saw transformers and it was kinda boring because I knew the whole time that the good guys would win and bad guys would die.

Vladimir Propp devised a structure that most stories follow and most actually do follow this simple structure.

  • There's a lot of movies like that: Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lecter escapes), Rosemary's Baby (the satanists win), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the aliens win)...

In "It's a Wonderful Life", Mister Potter got away with stealing the money.

It's clever, though, isn't it? He has no wife, no kids, no-one at all who loves him. When he tells George that he's worth more dead (because of the insurance policy), he's completely revealing his character that money is worth more than love. He gets away with stealing the eight grand, but in a way the reason he steals it becomes its own punishment. His life is pointless, apart from a number on a balance sheet.

They knew how to make films back then. It's one of my favourites.

Its not always good guys vs bad guys. I tend to watch lots of horror and sci fi films and its seems like more often than not, the main characters survive or accomplish their goal but fairly often it ends with either death, failure, or a twist.

No kidding, It's kinda cliche nowdays. You can almost quess whats going to happen in most movies.
