That i am being asked to do someone's else job....

....While not being allowed the necessary training to do it?

I work for the NHS with a colleague who can't handle her workload. One of the people she was supporting complained about the mess everything was in. She said she didn't have time to do the work.

My manager then handed the job to me, no questions asked. I now look after this section and have had good feedback.

However, my colleague is a higher grade than me and I am doing half her job for her! That's bad enough but I do it anyway to keep the peace and help the service run.

What I resent is I am inputting patient info on a database. I know it's not getting done right. It asks me questions about patient care pathways, waiting time directives, episodes of care etc. My manager (who has trouble just sending emails and hasn't a clue what's involved) says I don't need training.

I am raising this with the person I am now doing these additional duties for. I know they want the job done right.

Ask questions. Questions are key, and they want you to ask questions.
As for you doing a managers job, it shows a lot about you. You will benefit in the conpany this way. Keep it up, but ask some questions to get the job done correctly.

well what happens if you say "no"?

i guess you need to think about what options you can take
and what consequences you will face if you take them

  • I am being put under so much pressure to do this by my manager. But it's so unfair and I want to do a good job. I am writing a strongly-worded email regarding this tonight, explaining how I feel responsible for anything that may go wrong as a result of this.

I've been trying to get the training since December. No-one gives a shit in this place. Honestly - my manager doesn't like managing, she wants to be everyone's friend. She shows favouritism to the girl who's dumped have her job on me. The person I am doing the work for is happy I am doing it but she would like me to be trained too.

Aargh. I so need a new job.....

      • She does a bad job and doesn't care. In the meeting I asked her some queries I had (in front of our manager) and she just kept saying "oh that doesn't matter!". Manager said nothing.

I couldn't do a job without the correct training, and if someone won't give it to me I wouldn't want to keep doing it. I don't want to just do a shitty job I want to do my best. Some people obviously don't care as long as it gets done but I don't see it that way.
