Spontaneous pain in tooth?

So I'm just sitting here at my computer and I'm not eating anything, my teeth aren't resting against each other but I feel this MASSIVE amount of pain engulf the bottom of the right side of my mouth. It's so bad that when I went to move my mouth, I felt like throwing up from the pain but didn't. Now it's going down but it was persistent for nearly 5 minutes straight and hurt like hell. It felt as if someone had just put a knife inside my bottom jaw/tooth area and then removed it and kept stabbing the same exact area.

IIN? I can't afford to go to a dentist.

Some things you can do for the pain...

Place and hold a used tea bag on the gums where it hurts

Asprin- crush it up, place and hold directly where it hurts. Regular asprin tastes bad so go get the flavored BC powder asprin.

Alcohol-(liquor or mouthwash containing alcohol), soak a q-tip or gauze in it and place it on the gum. Or, hold a swig of it in your mouth for as long as you can stand

Fresh garlic-crush a clove somewhat and hold it where it hurts

Call your dentist and explain that you think you have an infection and you need antibiotics. Explain you cannot afford any procedure right now but need the medicine. He may say yes, might say no but it's worth asking. If it comes down to it, go to an urgent care place which shouldn't cost too much. They will give you antibiotics and might have some advice on how to get your dental work done cheaper.

      **IMPORTANT**

Follow the dosage guidelines on the asprin. Do not exceed the maximum dose. Even though you're not swallowing it your body still absorbs it and too much asprin can be fatal.

Same with alcohol. Alcohol passes through mucous membranes and is absorbed into the bloodstream, no digestion takes place. So be aware that holding alcohol in your mouth will result in some will be absorbed. It's not a huge deal but just FYI.

@SecretIdentity, have you ever worked in the dental field? These suggestions sound ridiculous from my point of view.

OP, DO NOT PLACE ASPIRIN ON YOUR GUMS. THIS CAUSES ACID BURN and is extremely harmful to your gingival tissue. I am a dental hygienist and I've seen so many patients do this. I have no idea where people got this idea, but it will NOT HELP. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen are not absorbed or digested through gingival tissue. This will only cause an aphthous ulcer(canker sore) and it becomes very very painful.

No, I haven't. I was citing home remedies that work for many people. I've used the asprin technique and it works beaitifully (I've used all those ideas and all work, some better than others). I believe *some* asprin is absorbed. There's a number of topical salicylate (sp?) products that reduce inflammation and pain. Aspercreme, etc. Of course, they are not made to go in the mouth. But holding some asprin in the mouth shouldn't cause any harm if done for short periods here and there and logically should reduce inflammation and pain.

To you it might sound silly but to someone in pain with no real options....well, it helps.

If its lasted a while then it could be an infection. You should find a way to see a dentist. Some dentists will not only work with you on payments, but will also refer you to companys that give credit for dental procedures, sorta like a credit card.

Could be sugar sensitivity. It happens to me when I eat honey and used to happen when I ate agave. The pain from the agave at first would hit me awhile after I ate my food. It was so painful!

Let me put it this way, can you afford a burial plot?
An infection in a tooth is only inches away from your brain. Follow the thought through to the end. Still think the dentist is too expensive?

    • Money doesn't grow on trees my friend. I've had work done once before about 9 months ago. I had to get a root canal on a molar on the other side of my mouth. I didn't qualify for their plans and it was $1500 and it had to be paid within 3 weeks. So again, I can not afford the dentist. Maybe you're well off financially but I am not. I am in debt right now from student loans and medical bills.

I'm a dental hygienist. You sound like you have either an apical or peridontal abscess. It can literally kill you if you ignore it. It's cheaper to go to a dentist than the ER. Your tooth might need an extraction depending on the severity. If it's salvageable, you can do another root canal with a porcelain fused to metal crown. And yes, unfortunately, root canals are expensive.

There are dental offices that offer payment plans. Do some research and ask around.

In the future, the best way to prevent abscesses, cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, etc is to brush thoroughly twice a day, floss(correctly) at least once a day, and scrape/brush the tongue. And, if insurance covers prophies(regular cleaning), I don't see why a person would not want to go in every 6 months(ADA recommended) or at least once a year. From my experience, more than 80% of my patients' conditions could have been prevented if they had a proper oral care routine at home.

        BEST OF LUCK!

Well, the ball is in your hands. What is your life worth to you? If you can't afford a root canal, have the bad tooth pulled, that's usually only a couple of hundred. Also there are dental colleges, where the students practice on you, but they are really cheap, if not free. But hey, badmouth me all you want for trying to help you; I'm sure it will make your tooth all better!

Dude, that was cold. Most people can't afford $1000. Come down from your million dollar life just for a minute.

Read the post by Parky_Parker and tell me how cold I'm being. I guess the OP needs to decide what his/her life is worth to her/him.
There are just some times when you've got to bite the bullet and pay the fee, or?
It behooves one to take very good care of one's teeth, it seems. I think this is one of those times for brutal honesty, not wishy washy suggestions.
