Somethings on my back at night, holding me down.

When i awake in the middle of the night, i will say around 2 or 3 in the morning, feels like something is like pressing down on me. I try to move but can't, try to see what the hell it was but the room gets really dark. It starts like, i hear a strange noise like foot steps, and the foot steps becomes closer and louder as it walks toward me. I'm my bed, don't know if it was some kind of nightmare or what. When happen to me, i tried to call out to someome but nobody seems to hear me. I wake up in fright, didn't want to ever sleep again. I heard this has happen to some people, but is it normal to do this while sleeping.

Yeah that makes sense a demon has nothing better to do, than hold someone down at 2 in the morning.

It is probably sleep paralysis. It can cause hallucinations and stuff. You'll dream half awake and unable to move. Historically it's described as encounters wih demons and incubus and succubus or the lady in black that paralyzes you and steals your soul in your sleep. But what you described is the most common description of sleep paralysis. Shadows, foot steps, inability to move or 'wake up' even though you feel awake. Some people even put an alien abduction theme over it, with their mind trying to scramble and explain what is happening.

This might be sleep paralysis. It isn't that common, but it isn't abnormal either.

What you experienced is a non-ordinary experience of several ordinary states.

    1. When you dream your brain releases powerful chemicals that paralyze your body so you don't act out your dream and hurt yourself. Sleep walkers are not getting this chemical. That running thru mud feeling in a dream when you are being chased is the body trying to move while paralyzed.

    2. When you dream, no matter how bizarre the dream is, it seems real. You hear sounds. You see things. You feel textures. Smell and taste. The centers of the brain that process these things are processing signals so it all seems real.

    3. States of consciousness. There are several but here we are only concerned with two: the dream state (REM sleep) and normal waking consciousness.

Now each of these are completely normal and scientifically verified and described. What happens when you have dream paralysis, are experiencing the seemingly real dream state AND wake up all at the same time?

Since ancient times this rare combination of physiological and consciousness states has been called The Demon. It can include the feeling of a presence (dream reality), touch (dream reality), voices (dream reality), and the experience of being stuck to the bed, pinned down, sat on, unable to move, paralyzed (the paralyzing chemicals in the system) all being experienced through the waking conscious awareness.

Two things then happen that can set up a feedback loop. The mind says, I am feeling, hearing, and experiencing something unusual. Which stirs fear. And you desperately ask What is it? As it searches for an answer in a split second it finds one out of the religious training: evil spirits, demons, ghosts... Which creates more fear. In my case, when I experienced this years ago, unable to even speak or move, I forced my self to yell "Jesus" and the experience immediately stopped. Which reinforced the idea that it was a spiritual demonic encounter.

However the word was selected on the basis of my background, and was uttered only when the paralysis "drug" wore off. I could have as well said "Matchbook!", for the word did not end it. The ending of the paralysis allowed the word to be said.

Nothing to fear. No demon attack. Just an unusual dream/sleep experience to enjoy.

I have had the same problem with sleep paralysis. People who make stupid jokes about it have never experienced it and can't understand how terrifying it can be. I was once seriously sleep deprived for weeks because it happened every single time I went to sleep.

You have to learn to accept that it's just a physical problem and learn NOT to be afraid. That's easier said then done, but if you can get to the point where you can relax and just tell yourself to go back to sleep, it will pass.

It helps to learn something about lucid dreaming. You just have to be able to take control of the situation and not let it control you.

    Good luck!

Wow that is scary! I've seen a bit on sleep paralysis, and If that happened to me, I would never sleep AGAIN.

Happens to me once or twice a year. You're paralyzed when you dream so you don't act out your dreams. Sometimes you regain consciousness without "waking up." Don't sweat it. Instead, try to take control by forcing yourself to think of funny or pleasant things.

if it is a ghost then just be polite and tell it to leave you alone. ghosts can be very bad especially if you can astrotravel because when you leave your body, they can enter it. its complicated to explain but be super polite, tell it that you care for it and you want it to be happy and to leave you alone. dont be nasty to it at all.
the same thing happened to me once when i was younger and i nearly crapped my pants but i told it nicely to leave me alone and it did. you dont want to mess with it.

if you believe folklore, then it's an incubus or succubus demon holding you down while you sleep. Wiki it, it's kinda interesting.
