So confused by religion

I am so confused and frustrated that so many people believe in religion, it's so primal and outdated that I'm shocked it's still around.

I've talked to people before who are intelligent, I've had long conversations with them about all manner of subjects in a mature and intelligent manner then all of a sudden they talk about a man in the sky who watches everyone and floods and talking snakes guarding Apple tree's and I think to myself, all of a sudden you sound insane. If a man was wandering the streets talking about a talking dog he'd be labeled insane yet you mention a talking snake, a God creating the world in 6 days, and a guy controlling everything it's normal, what has happened? Does anyone else find it completely mind bending that people actually still believe in a religion

I agree, however most Christians have not actually read the Old Testament, and the vast majority of those who have don't actually believe in it all. For most people it's all symbolic and metaphorical, and as for the laws about food and homosexuality and so on, most Christians view them as outdated and don't believe in them. However I agree about the whole God creating the world thing, I really don't understand how people believe in that.

you're meant to be, it's meant to be ambiguous. That's why its called faith. If it was all cemented in fact and clear and easy to understand then it would be knowledge, not faith.
I'm an atheist by the way.

It depends on how they believe in their religion.

You can certainly be an intelligent person and still believe in a religion, and religious beliefs can be intelligently thought through.

I do feel the same way sometimes, though, thinking how can a grown up think like that. Like when hearing a grown woman say that she should vote for presidential elections because of some piece of scripture.
I may, however, be misjudging, and read things into what she is saying that help me look down on her religiousness.

If you're confused by something, it seems to me that the next logical step should be attempting to understand it.

    • I've tried, to understand it I put the time in to read the king james bible.

It was the most disgusting, depraved thing I've ever read

If you want to understand religious people, you're not going to do it by reading scripture. Scripture isn't what made them religious. Many religious people will have never read scripture extensively, and most of them probably don't even believe most of what is in it literally.

You actually understand the appeal of religion by thinking about *people*. Explore reasons why people might be religious. Consider the experiences they may have had which are different to yours. Consider the contents of their upbringing, and the different framework for logic they have developed as a result of it. Think of them holistically. Resist easy conclusions like "they're just stupid".

Yes. I wholeheartedly agree! I recommend you listen to a guy named Michael Tsarion and his ideas and how he essentially sorted out the lies from the history.

It doesn't have to be Christianity. Every single religion preys on the insecurities of people and soothes them with platitudes. They all relieve people of responsibility for their actions (god's will crap) and many offer forgiveness for the most horrendous crimes.
Religion is the opiate of the masses and absolutely the worst idea man has ever come up with.

How do you suppose the world came about?

It's Darwinism of ideas. Many ideas were used to manipulate the masses over millennia. The ineffective ones died out. Islam and Christianity have survived the test of time as the most effective way to high jack sensibility from the masses.

Just out of interest, do you consider yourself spiritual at all? Are you an extrovert or an introvert?

    • Not spiritual in the slightest and sometimes introvert sometimes extrovert probably slightly more towards introvert

I know it's confusing but plenty of intelligent people were indoctrinated since childhood, so the ideas were drilled in since young age.

Unlike Santa Claus, the ideas continue to be drilled until death.

Most religions were fabricated many, many years ago by people had no idea how the world worked. Why does the sun rise? god did it. Why did the weather change? god did it. Why did I get sick after eating raw pork? must be demons.

The reason these religions still exist is not through a campaign of recruiting. They exist because generations have been bred to believe them.

Some people have a need to believe in something. Religion has been used largely to dominate. Reading something and having a true understanding is very different, have you tried actually asking people from different variations of Christianity if they understand the bible? Many don't. Or maybe they can help you understand why they believe.
