She's probably insecure about her own weight, and is projecting it onto her kid instead of doing something about it. I've seen a similar thing happen before with a girl I knew in primary school years ago; she had a severely obese mum but she was stick thin because her mum told her she was fat, and I've always presumed it made the mum feel better about her weight. It was terrible looking back, I hope she's okay now.

Just because the mother is obese doesn't mean the daughter doesn't have a "fat ass."

If she is being serious, yes, there is something wrong with the picture. As dom said, this woman is projecting her weight problem on to her child.

I had a roommate who was my height and twice my weight do this to me when I was 14 and stick thin. She'd tell me about how fat I was getting because you know, when girls hit puberty, the only thing their supposed to get is boobs. That is literally the only biological change, save for periods.

My grandmother is also obese due to the steroids she must take for her heart problems and she has made it a point to let me know that despite my taking after her, appearance wise, I am *SO* much heavier than she ever was in her 20's.

Did I forget to add that my roommate was Bipolar, leaning heavily (no pun intended) on the depressive side and that my grandmother was a "dancer" back in the day? Think about it. This woman must have serious emotional issues that probably contribute to her own weight problem.

That depends. Maybe she was only joking. Mothers and daughters joke you know.
