Sleep paralysis is it normal?

So, I was always fascinated with lucid dreaming and I didn't think sleep paralysis was such a big deal...until I had one.

I usually go to bed at 4 something AM. And get out of bed at around 12 to 1 PM. Today I went to bed at 4 something AM...and I got up to use the restroom at 10:36 AM. It took me a bit to fall back asleep. I had a dream. After that dream...I realized I was back in my bedroom. My hand was laying on my stomach...and it felt heavy...and I felt like I was being crushd! It was very painful. I tried to move it but I realized I couldn't. I tried harder. And I still couldn't move. So I realize it's sleep paralysis. I tried deep breathing...and it felt like it took me some time to actually open my eyes. And my eyelids were very heavy...and kept closing... I had to keep one eye open. My eyelids got so heavy they started closing on their own. Everything was going dark...and it looked like some electricity in my vision. I felt heavy. And sick. I thought I was dying.. And I said to myself "this isn't my time!" and I woke up...finally able to move!

After this I realized I had a sleep paralysis. And I want to know if you think this is sleep paralysis. It was very scary. And I wanted to have one. But after this one I was very freaked out. But yet again, I'm fascinated by it...and wouldn't mind trying to have a lucid dream from it, when it happens again.

Is this sleep paralysis? What else could it be?! Do any of you guys have the same experiences??

This happens to me every time i sleep because of my thyroid condition. They really aren't that bad once you get used to them. just set your alarm early so you have time to start moving. Also, being yanked off of the bed/ couch works well if you have something soft to land on and a willing helper. Just anything to snap you out of it; thrash, scream, flex. If you aren't careful, you will fall back asleep.

    • Ok. But how do you make them happen? I'm obsessed and fascinated by it. And would like to able to make it happen whenever I wanted to.

I get it from time to time. Its a weird feeling being awake and not being able to move. Sometimes this happened in nightmares where I am unable to move or yell. But for the most part It just wares off after a few seconds, no big deal.

My friend has it a lot and she says she thought someone was trying to smother her in her pillow. She woke up on her front and she said it felt like someone was holding her there. She even blamed her boyfriend at first. She gets it far worse than I do.

Also sleep paralysis is your brains way of stopping your body thrashing around too much when you are dreaming. Nothing to do with evil spirits or any of that nonsense.

    Shit be scary, yo.

  • I have it a lot. Someone told me it was due to certain chemical releases in the brain, or lack of chemical releases or something.

    • Chemical imbalances to the brain. Yes, that's one of the reasons it could be happening.

When I was trying to lucid dream, I had a sleep paralysis experience. Having researched it, the fear that comes with it was repressed by my fascination by what was going on. I don't recall feeling crushed, but it was more difficult to breathe and I couldn't move. My body felt heavy. It was weird... I tried to move my arm, and I _felt_ it move up, but it was like a ghost arm. My arm actually did not move at all. I avoided looking around my room and kept my eyes shut, because I knew there was a possibility of hallucinations and I didn't want to panic. I tried quickly opening and closing my eyes, scrunching my face, because I had read that that was supposed to be a fail safe method of getting out of sleep paralysis. It didn't work, so I started wiggling my toes and slowly worked up to kicking my legs. Eventually I was able to sit up, which broke the paralysis. Before I did I was curious and opened my eyes to look around my room. To my right there was a shadowy black-cloaked figure with a skull head in a hood. It was pretty sweet. I want sleep paralysis to happen to me again, because I want to try using it to enter a lucid dream. I wasn't successful any other way.

Your experience is very similar to mine. I woke up, felt heavy, couldn't take my head off the pillow or lift my arm off the mattress. I thought I'd suffered a stroke and would be permanently paralysed. I was scared stiff and there was a rising panic at not being able to move in the short-term.

After sixty to ninety seconds, I pretty much had full movement back. I'm led to believe it's an area in the posterior pons which paralyses our muscles while we sleep so we don't sleep walk (it's probably responsible for the feeling of walking through treacle in dreams) but it also messes up a little and paralyses us while awake, which is much scarier.

I only had it once. If it happens again, I'd be less scared but so far, it hasn't.

Definitely sleep paralysis. But I have a more spiritual idea of what that is. I think it's just an evil presence, they can't hurt you though. If you research it, many people record black figures walking around, and a heaviness, as if they were sitting on them. I remember when it happened to me it was something like that.

I would try not going to bed at such a late hour, it would do wonders for you I'm sure.
The thing is when you get up and go back to sleep, I don't know what happens, but for me, the likeliness of remembering a dream is a lot higher. So if you have less interrupted sleep you are likely not to experience that again for awhile but I can't guarentee anything.

    • I am very spirtual. However, I don't believe in evil spirits or whatever. Hah! I didn't see any shadows...however, sometimes at night I'll see something just standing there. Or a huge spider. And then my mind kind of snaps out of it!

To be honest, I'm very excited now. I wouldn't mind having another sleep paralysis. To me it's fascinating. I'm going to try and stay calm and make a lucid dream out of it next time! Yes, it was scary. But so fucking exciting!!!!

        • Well, it's perfectly safe scientifically speaking. And I do find it to be natural.

It's only natural in the sense that it is a more common phenomena. I was just looking out for you based on my experiences.

            • Yes, it's scary. But only so because your mind makes up the strangest things! It's fun.
