Sister naming her son taig ; insulting my family

My sister announced at dinner the other night she is naming her son Taig. My husband is from Belfast, and we are both Catholic. My sister was raised Catholic but married a Baptist and has said several hateful things about the Catholic Church to us even though she knows how we feel. My husband, was naturally insulted that she would choose such a name as Taig, when it is a very derogatory term for an Irish Catholic. My sister insists that she had no idea of its implications but I feel like she is doing it to spite us. Is this kind of vindictive behaviour normal?

This makes me think of that couple who named their son "Hitler" and his sister "Aryan or Aran Nation". I don't think its good to name anyone after things like these. She's setting her son up for potential teasing and prejudice. He might even grow up to hate her for naming him such a horrible thing. Maybe, you all should sit her down and explain how horrible that name is and that she should leave her issues with your religion out of her baby's name. She's being incredibly immature.

    I think it's a nice name, it's a shame about the connotations.

    What about Teague?

I have never heard the word "taig" before, so I didn't know it was derogatory. But, I was raised in the rural south - not too many Catholics around these parts, Irish or not. I learned something new today.

    • There are Catholics and then there are Irish Catholics from Belfast. You should do some research first and see how they've suffered for centuries and that might change your opinion.

Catholicism is oppression; A city doesn't make them special.

All religions are if you are trying to make them that way in your mind. Catholicism is not oppressive. I'm a Baptist by the way.

The teachings of Catholicism are mentally, emotionally, & sexually oppressive. This is especially true if you're a woman.

The pope used the Christmas holiday to condemn gay people is this kind of vindictive behaviour normal?

Sorry it is just pretty rich to hear a Catholic talk about vindictive behaviour.

    • You obviously don't know anything about the struggle in Northern Ireland.

I know about the struggle, I even favor the Irish side over the Loyalist side. Doesn't mean I approve of that pedophile protecting religion. Would you win your freedom just to support institutions that persecute others? Well then you don't deserve it.

Think of all of the children who starve and die of HIV in Africa because their parents were told by Catholics that condoms don't work and aren't protective. Told that any birth control was wrong. So they bred themselves to misery. Would you come from a nation that experienced a famine made by Britain just to support an institution that has made its own famines?

Birth control is wrong, and I don't approve of condoms and things like it. But having sex is an option. the pope didn't make them get HIV. You don't want it don't have sex.

Can you show me the part where Jesus said "Lie to your hearts content if it gets the message out?".

Also so the women who is married to a man with HIV deserves to get it herself because she was told condoms are of no use by a Catholic organization? Told that condoms will send her to hell.

Funny I don't see many of the twelve children families round north Ireland anymore, seems like they are using birth control. I bet your wife will use it too and you will approve because everyone in the current era knows that 12 kids is no good for the community or the people in the marriage. Sanctimonious. Western Catholics (and Christians in general) willing to export their rubbish but not live by it.

Average family size in N.Ireland: 2.51. Over 70% Catholic. Really living what you preach there.

Jesus never said lie to your hearts content. However the pope might not have said condoms do not work as in holding seamen, but said it in the context of if God wants you to have this baby no condom will protect you from having it. And people took this to what you are saying.

You are taking my words a twisting them, women don't deserve HIV I never said they did. You can ask if they have it (they might know) or you could not have sex.

I do not live in Ireland so I don't have any idea about family sizes. You are right 12 kids I a lot for one family. But did you ever think maybe there just not getting pregnant (sex without a condom doesn't always lead to pregnancy)

I try to live what I believe and "export" to others, sometimes I fail, so I don't expect others to be perfect.

I am a single, 25 year old American male and have never had sex. I have been in many relationships, trying to find God's match for me.

Yep, just another way for religion to be divisive.. talking to her isn't going to accomplish anything, just cut her out of your life entirely like a cancer and move on. See how she feels about that.
