Honestly, I am afraid of the dark. Personally, I don't think that it is normal. Unless there is danger in the dark, there is no reason to be scared. I can see being scared of the dark walking around at night, but if you are in your own house and afraid of your dark hallway, that is probably not normal.

But I am afraid of the dark. :/

Actually I don't think people are scared OF the dark. They're just scared of what's IN the dark or what is lurking around. I hate how our eyes make things look creepy when its dark.

Fear of the dark in adults often (but not always) coincides with either 1) nightmares or 2) having more traumatic memories than the average person. Nothing to be ashamed of, hell, I sleep with a lamp on.

Well if you're in a dark alleyway or a forest at night, of course you should fear the dark. Someone could ambush you.

  • TheProph

Well, no one is actually afraid of the dark itself, they're afraid of the unknown, of what they can't see.

And it's completely normal for people to be afraid of the unknown their entire lives.

To say "I'm not afraid of the dark" entails more than being able to be inside your own house where you know the lay out of everything in the dark. It would also mean being able to be in a strange place. Like, for example, you're shopping at Wal-Mart at night, suddenly the lights go out. If you became afraid, it's because you're actually afraid of the dark.

My point is (I'm tired, so forgive me if it doesn't make much sense) that just because you can walk around your own comfort zone, aka your house/apartment/cardboard box, in the dark with no fear, it doesn't mean you're not afraid of the dark.

You should be afraid, you can't see, and when you can't see you're incredibly vulnerable. Think of all the serial killerss...and spiders...crawling into your ears...and you don't even know...D:

It's silly. Ghosts, vampires, monsters, etc don't exist. I never feared the dark or thunderstorms because I've never even remotely believed anything one could attribute to the so called paranormal.

If you live in my neighbourhood, you should always be afraid of the dark, and never go into it unarmed.

F.E.A.R. : False Emotions Appearing Real. There is nothing to be afraid of about the dark, you just have these false thoughts in your head that something bad is going to happen because it's dark, but in reality, you are perfectly fine.

We need fear. It stops us from doing dangerous things that would otherwise kill us.

      • davesumba

And we don't need fear. Fear can also stop us from doing stuff that we actually really need to be doing (because of our false emotions appearing real!!!! I can't say it enough)

There's nothing in this world you should be afraid of. There are thing's that need to be respected, and you shouldn't mess with. But that doesn't mean you should fear them.

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."

      • davesumba

False. There is a big difference between fear and instincts. You don't have to be afraid of heights to know that jumping off a 100 story building is going to kill you and you shouldn't do it. etc

And my advice holds 100% true in this specific case. The only reason people are afraid of the dark, is because they don't know what could be there. They are FALSELY being afraid of things that aren't even there, simply because they can't see everything as clearly.

People are scared something is going to jump out from behind a tree and attack them at night. When in reality, the chances of that happening are no greater than it happening in the middle of broad day light. But these thoughts don't even cross those people's minds in the daytime, so why should they at night? There's no good reason, other than that their false emotions are appearing real.

I heavily dislike 2 kinds of dark.

First: Cellar. The electric box is down there, and if a fuse blows in the evening, i can't change it until the next morning. Too afraid to go down.

Second: Woods at night. Too many sounds and too many forms to make something out, and too many branches so moonlight and stars get blotted out. If i am deep enough in trees at night, i get really scared.

All other forms of dark, i can pretty much live with, unless they are too similar to either of these.

Yep. I wasn't afraid of the dark when I was a kid... But now I am. Horror stories will do that to you, man :D
I'm even afraid of the dark when I'm at home :D
I always hear weird noises and always think someone is behind me or something (like serial killers, vampires and stuff)... :D

I'm seventeen. Terrified of what I see in the dark. It's all because of growing up with horror films and crazy shit. I had to get a different bed so that there wasn't an 'underneath' I used to jump a good 5 feet off my bed to get to the door.. I have to close my closets. And I have 2 night lights.

Fear of actual darkness? Silly but to each his own.

Fear of other stuff, made worse by darkness, e.g. wolves or some shit? Perfectly rational survival instinct and if you try to breed it out of my species I'll kill you.

By waiting outside your house until it gets dark. You won't even double check you smug prick.

    Love you all :D

A fear of the dark is inherent in all and goes back to when we lived in caves nd such, when you got stuff that wanted you for lunch.
now long dead (we ate them to extinction)
as we learned about the planet, there was less need to be afraid of what was lurking in the dark, because it was now familiar, but a lot harder to turn off the instinctive feelings.the rest of your senses work overtime to fill in the black that's how horror films work on us playing with our primeval fears.
so no its more normal not to like the dark than like it.
strange fact but most men as "protectors" sleep facing the door.

  • I can't sleep when there's any lights on. Even the ones from the street lights through my window bother me. You guys are just afraid of the unknown. I would only get freaked out if I was driving alone at night in the mountains.

I think it could go up to age 13, but after 13, you need to find yourself help because there's nothing in the darkness unless you leave all the windows and doors opened and post a sign outside that reads "come in goblins".

I'm afraid of the dark. Even in my own house. I used to have to turn on the lights whenever I go and had light switches installed at the beginning and ending of every wall. I am still afraid of the dark but I suck it up.

  • I just started to be affraid of the dark. Well, not of the dark but when you see those horror movies, read some ghost stories and look in the dark it sometimes becomes scary for me, that some kind of killer will show up and kill me or whatsoever. I feel pathetic but I can't forget a movie 'Child's play'. I saw it when I was 9 years old and I'm still affraid of that stupid doll :D
