Should women be made to serve the army if they demand equal rights?

I'm from the country of Singapore and that we as men are being forced to serve in the army due to our small manpower in defenses and to bulk up our army.

I'm speaking on the behalf of most countries where serving the army is a must for the most 2 years, where males are the ones forced. Taiwan, South Korea...

With all this feminists demanding equal treatment of women throughout these countries, shouldn't they serve the army as well, since they demanded for equal treatment?

I simply find it annoying to see them demanding things like education privileges and unbiased leadership selection while shunning away things like serving in the military as a duty for the country. If they want to be treated equally, that would mean both the good and bad things am I right?

I don't care about their physical capabilities, weaker muscles...etc..there are plenty of wartime heroines out there who do great, courageous things.

besides, the army does not refer solely to gun-holding soldiers, there is a huge need for nurses and clerical staffs as well...that women are most favorable for.

No they should not 14
Yes they should 70
Yes, but with a shorter time 6

    Actually, i agree.

For us to be taken serious in a quest for equal pay(the one thing still quite off even in the more gender-equal countries), equal chances, etc...then we have to take the good and the bad.

We have a higher life expectancy, but are not drafted into the military AND may stop working earlier than our male counterparts. Just for examples. The work thing, i kind of always saw as a "payback" for lower wages. But the military thing is stupid, especially since most guys also lose other benefits(often student discounts are age-limited...and they lost some of that time to being in the military).

Then again, i'd be for abolishing the military system as a whole, and would probably instead give everybody an equal amount of first aid courses, ethics and morality-courses and some indoctrination in national identity. -_-

Drafted armies won't have time to get drafted in nowadays war scenarios, anyway. Cultural indoctrination would be a better defence nowadays.

warning, the indoctrination might work both ways, and we could gst stupider as a whole from those hillbillies

If tomorrow, signing up for the selective service became mandatory for women as well as men, I'd be the first to stand in line to sign up.

It would be a momentous day for women's rights when we are recognized officially, by the government, as being as useful (or as disposable) as men are. It almost boils my blood hot that many feminists think that we deserve equality, but don't believe that we women are strong enough to handle the consequences of equality. In a way, what they advocate is special treatment, rather than true equality.

However, I would have to agree with Dappled. I would never dream to force a woman who is pregnant or nursing into the military, nor would I force a single parent of either gender into service as well (however, single parents aren't even allowed to enlist in the military here so that would not happen as it would violate basic enlistment policies).

This is a curious issue, as I know that the military here in the US has a problem with female troops impregnating themselves to get out of deployment. It's not common but it does happen. Disappointing, if you ask me.

Unfamiliar with Singapore but in the US feminists have always been fighting for the right to serve in the army and on the frontline. THEY WANT THAT. It's the old politicians that think they shouldn't.

I understand it's different with the two year law but I do think women should serve.

Yes; we should. And we should be given all the same positions as men too.

I don't think anyone should be *made* to serve in the military full stop.

There are two ways to make it equal: conscript men and women or conscript neither men nor women. I advocate the second measure over the first, but I don't know much about the politics of your country and if conscripting soldiers is necessary or not. If it really is necessary, I think it should be equal and men and women should both be conscripted.

I wish the total abolishment of conscription is possible, unfortunately, it isn't =(

I really wish it was true for my country...

:( In that case, I think it's really unfair that women aren't conscripted. It places double the pressure on the men.

But we want to win the war

  • They should be. If they want the positives, they get the negatives, that's what equality involves...But, I can assure you that most of the women on here that like to speak about equality all the time will not comment at all, because they dissagree with what you say, yet know if they say that that the'd be seen as not wanting equality at all.

For example me I speak of equality and i think women should serve on the frontline. And let's not forget the other female posters that think women should serve, or that "yes" is the leading choice. Oh wait that doesn't fit anything you just assumed. It's almost as if you were wrong.

      • You are implying that I never admit to being wrong, which I actually do more than most people on this site, believe it or not. Yes, I was wrong here, I assumed something, and I was wrong. I'll still be waiting to see you admit to being wrong.

I agree. But, you can't fight feminism with logic. They will hiss and spit acid at you and accuse you of being anti-feminist. It's ridiculous.

I know that in Israel both men and women go into their military service for 2 years before they start college.

I agree with you. If women want equal right I think that goes for everything. That includes equal training. Equal combat regulations and equal deployment.

The answer is NO, and the reason should be obvious from the question. Women demand equal RIGHTS - and forced military service is certainly not a right - quite the opposite in fact!

We as the males of the country do have the right of freedom to choose whether or not we should serve the country. Unfortunately, we do not have a choice.

Serving the country in the military is a national duty and all citizens regardless of gender or background has to be able to contribute.

My take on this, either impose military service for both genders or abolish it completely. why should one gender be only responsible for the safety of the country when it should be everyone's responsibility.

true, women demand equal rights, but they have to contribute in order to be given those rights. We men are more or less preferred over certain roles as we have deserved our placing over serving the nation and protecting it.

well, the above paragraph applies for countries where the males are required to serve.

I don't think the women should serve the army anyhwere. I think they should stay home and take care of the house, family and kids. Funny that i am a woman who's saying it but i am not a feminist.

Yea, but wait till next year when I'm too old to draft. =)

Seriously though, yes. With the exception of those who have children. In that case, one parent should stay home. They should decide which is to be drafted by who would better serve the army.

With some exceptions, yes. I mean, nobody would expect a breast-feeding mother to be conscripted (and bring her child, presumably).

But, in principle, I don't see why conscription should be male only (unless there are other non-gender considerations). From what I've heard, women make good soldiers.

Conscription is against my religion. We're supposed to rely on the rythm method.
