Should users feel bad when they delete comments?

I never delete comments on my own stories/polls. I almost never delete my own comments - I have on one or two occasions, because it has been at the request of a friend. If I make an arse of myself in a comment, I don't think that's a good enough reason to delete it. I'm mature enough to deal with it.

I am against people deleting the posts of others when they delete simply because they disagree with the opinion expressed or just because they dislike the user who commented. I don't think it should be allowed for anything other than offensive comments or spam.

Free speech isn't a bad thing.

I never delete comments and, like Charli.m said it's petty to delete comments because just you disagree with it, but I do think it should be an option. I'm sure it is sometimes used properly and deleters seem like the type of people who don't hang around here long so, whatever. Years ago, on one of my first stories people said some very derogatory things about me, but still I left the comments as they were because that's just how some people think of me in that situation. I asked and they told. That's the point.

I don't delete my comments. If what I say offends, oh well.

Then again, there are some who abuse the hell out of the system and post stuff completely off topic and of no contributory nature.

It's odd the the link says "hide" when (as far as I can tell) it deletes them completely. Maybe it would be better if it just hid them in the same way that a low rating does, so people could still read it if they really wanted.

I have not created a post for long but I have deleted comments on a post I have created because in my opinion people are influenced by the first comments on a post. So if a user has decided to take it on the funny side and I want the discussion to be serious I just delete it.

The only time, that I remember, that I have ever deleted a comment is when I specifically said not to comment on what you voted for in a post because I didn't want to influence the other voters.

Other than that, I only delete my own comments and, even though I may want to, I decide to leave the rude and/or random comments that people make on any of my posts.

Think they should get rid of the option and replace it with REPORT button.

I think the admin or some filter they put on deletes comments. I noticed some of my stories lost a lot of normal comments. Unless people are reporting them for no reason, and the admin doesn't bother to do his job (seems like it these days) I only delete my old comment/stories that I don't like anymore if people comment on them to bring me back, or if I was in a bad/weird mood when I wrote them. So anyway I don't look down on it, because I don't know if they or the admin deleted it

How else would they fend me off....

I didn't know I could delete comments on my stories. But I don't think I'm gonna use it, anyway.

The only time I've deleted one of my own comments was when I saw that someone had written almost the exact same comment a few seconds earlier.
