Should turkey be allowed to be part of european union?

I just saw the same question for UK and thought that if there is one country that struggles with this question more than others it must be Turkey. What is your opinion?

Yes, Turkey should be in European Union. 19
No, Turkey should not be in European Union. 16
Doesn't matter to me. 6

From a geography view, only a small portion of Turkey is situated on the European continent so how would that work?

But I'm more concerned about the Turkish government conduct in terms respecting human rights. I would say no until Turkey can ensure it's citizen rights are respected and upheld.

From a geographic, cultural and historic perspective, Anatolia (Modern Turkey), as well as parts of Eastern Europe, the Levant and Northern Africa, have always been problematic.
I think that the better question, is how far should the European Union sphere of influence extend?
From a geographical standpoint, I think that the EU's influence should extend southward through the Sahara, to the approximate boundary of the Sahel (including Mauritania, the Northern portions of Mali, Niger and Chad, as well as Sudan (northern). Thence northward up the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba and following the Jordan Rift Valley. Lebanon and the Westernmost (Mediterranean) portion of Syria. Thence Northward through the approximate boundary of the Anatolian Peninsula, through the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. All of Ukraine and Belarus and the Nortwesternmost portion of Russia (Ingria and Karelia) to the White Sea.
Now, there are competing spheres of influence.
Those of the Sub-Saharan Africans. They would extend their sphere of influence northward, through the Sahara, to the approximate end of the hyper-arid desert (excluding the Mediterranean coastal areas) and down the Nile River Valley to Alexandria, Egypt.
The Persian - Arabic sphere of influence, would extend through North Africa (as described above) to the Mediterranean coast and include Anatolia.
The Russian sphere of influence would include Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.

These would also fall in line with a cultural and historical perspective, more or less. The Caucasus and nearby Russian Republics, would be within 1, 2 or possibly 3 spheres of influence.

The idea here, is to let the people who reside in these overlapping spheres of influence decide. They do not necessarily need to choose 'sides'. This will be for Administrative purposes only. They could co-operate with any sphere on different issues, whichever is most practical or pragmatic.

So, to answer your question, I think that the Anatolian portion of Turkey will be in the European Union's sphere of influence. I also think that the Kurds should be allowed to hold a plebiscite to determine their own region (parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria).

The people who live in all these regions will decide and choose. There should be no fighting, they will pick which works to their best advantage, on any particular issue.

No I think they shouldn't. Mostly because they're Muslims and it would cause a lot of problems since Islam and other religions are very different. Don't get me wrong I'm not a religious person but I think those religions just shouldn't colide.

You have twice used terms which divide people who believe in a particular branch of the Abrahamic religions, from other people who also believe in the teachings of Abraham. These terms also divide these people from people who have other religious beliefs, as well as from people who are not religious. This might be offensive to some people, whether they are religious or whether they are not religious.

Why are you creating divisions in society?

I never tried to be offensive and I usually don't care about what people believe in but Muslims are very concerned about their religion, much more than other religions and they tend to act rashly when it comes to that subject so I think it would only make more troubles.

You are the one causing trouble, not 'them'.

Turkey is in the general area of the European Union... and has been trying to join the European Union since god knows when. A world history teacher of mine once said that the only reason Turkey still hasn't joined the EU is because they're Muslim and Arabic. God forbid a Muslim country join the EU. Also, compared to some of the other countries in the EU, they're advanced.

Turkey has modernized pretty quick, and in terms of its humanitarian aid... actually helpful. Look at what they're doing to help Somalia.
