Should there be noise laws on motor vehicles?

I have noticed lately as I drive 40,000 miles a year there seem to be more loud vehicles on the road. I don't know if that is caused by customization, poor engineering or just inattentiveness to vehicle maintenance. Is this a normal thought to be thinking? Also, people who drive these loud vehicles (motorcycles, cars, trucks, etc.) should be put on a list for paying in full on their own funds for hearing aids in the event they go deaf. By the way, sound over 80 decibels heard for a long time causes deafness.

Yes, there should be noise ordinances 26
No, there should not be noise ordinances 15

Actually there already are such laws. Lake pipes on street vehicles have been illegal for many years.

There are already noise laws. The cops just don't bother to test vehicles.

In my country, it's 90dB Total (road noise + engine/exhaust noise) AFAIK.

Well whichever nation you live in must be a lot quieter to live in because some people DO NOT have the blessing of noise laws and this is the point of my question.

The cops never bother to test though, so many vehicles exceed this.

Not to mention the people with custom exhausts and stereos and motorcyclists that just HAVE to run their engine to MAX rpm.

Despite the noise laws, it's not necessarily quieter.

Interesting fact: There are also rules at certain airports requiring aircraft to reduce power after take-off if possible to reduce noise. (It's more likely that a pilot WILL comply with these)

Well for those whom are making comments, I want you to know that I guess these laws must not be either Federal or properly enforced. This is for the people whom don't understand the point of what too much noise such as television commercials.

First of all, some older vehicles are 'grandfathered in', meaning they are not required to have anything other than the technology or standards of the time they were built. A car built before seat belts were standard are not required to have seat belts, or mufflers, or mirrors, etc. People take advantage of this and run open pipes. However, that can still be charged with excessive noise if hey are causing a nuisance.

If you look in an aftermarket car parts catalog, you'll see that certain exhaust systems are not legal in many states for modern vehicles.

Most states have yearly safety and emission inspections, and if there's problems with the exhaust, they fail. If a muffler falls off, people can be stopped for inadequate equipment and fined. People regardless of their 'right' to run straight pipes, can still be charged for noise.

An exhaust system is very costly and many people take the risk for as long as possible to save up for the repairs.

People here get stopped and charged all the time for loud exhaust but many can't go out and fix it the next day.

There are already laws on "noise pollution", but I wish something could be done about motorcycle noises.

There are tons of laws to limit the noise levels of vehicles, every thing from the exhaust and motor noise, to sound system limits. Obviously these laws are applicable to each individual town and their policies.

    In the U.S. at least.

I dont trust quiet vehicles. Loud is proud. There's nothing like the sound of and old car roaring. The sound of a sweet exhaust actually turns me on. The meaner it sounds, the more I love it. Oh and the sound huge trucks make when downshifting really shivers my timbers. That rumbling grumbling sound. Oooohhh I love it soooo much.I'm getting a bit flustered just thinking about it

That's called 'Jake brake'!! If you look, you'll see a lot of towns have signs posted banning Jake braking within a certain area. It's too loud....I guess. I like that noise too but I suppose if it was a high traffic area it might get really annoying.

I guess the OP is oblivious to a lot for someone who drives so much. Thee's so many laws and bans and crap relating to vehicle noise it's hard to believe anyone doesn't know this. Enforcement of the laws is another thing entirely, but...still....

Oh I see. I've never seen a sign like that around where I live. But I just love that sound so much. I'm only slightly farmiliar with these laws now. I personally don't like silent vehicles. I like to feel my motor runnin'
