Should the uk pull out of the european union?

Now here's a very rare political opinion poll in 'Is it normal?'. To make the debate interesting, please include your reasoning as to why you decided to vote that way. Thank you.

Thanks for the posts, guys. Keep them coming. The frustrating thing is no matter how good my Google engineering is, I find it hard to find a fair and balanced argument for the economic and political pros and cons of staying in the EU or leaving it. If anyone can find one, please share with the rest of us.

And I think I should change the wording of the question: I am talking about membership of the European Union, not a method of contraception.

This was a really good Newsnight special with arguments from both sides. It definitely gave me food for thought.

No. Not only should the United Kingdom not pull out of the European Union, the EU should be considering greater geopolitical union with other regions.

United we stand, divided we fall.
    -Aesop.

This does not mean, however, that our current political structures should remain in their present form.
I think that we should seriously consider a transformation from the archaic political power structures of today, to a new, more inclusive and efficient and effective system of good governance.

No: pulling out is not an effective form of contraception.

No, no no no no. Anyone is this country who thinks that we should pull out of the EU is either stupid, or has been reading too much of the Daily Mail. Most Daily Mail readers are stupid anyway, so I'll assume both. Business business business.

That's your opinion, but there are valid reasons for leaving, just as there are for staying. It's a very complex, multifaceted debate and lumping all those with an opposing view to yours together and labelling them as stupid is a childish stance in a discussion.

Yeah and be a Protectorate of Brussels like the Republic of Ireland.

Seriously, if you like it so much move to the continent. I'll happily trade spots.

I know nothing about the subject, but I find this kind of thing a lot more interesting than dog fucking posts. What are the pros and cons?

As I understand it, we'd be better off staying with the current arrangement we have: in the EU, but exempt from the single currency. While it's true that we put in more than we get back out in terms of raw money, we also get the trade alliances and the official, legitimate influence over other countries in the Union. Theoretically, it also gets us more influence with America, because as a member we act as America's opportunity to gain influence in the EU. Also, European imports would probably be much more expensive if we left the Union.

EDIT: It's worth pointing out that I'm in favour of the single currency on principle, even though it's probably not in our interests to be part of it.

  • as David Cameron and the unionist keep on saying ''United we stand divided we fall'' If that stands for the United Kingdom then it equally stands for the European Union.

Well if Switzerland can cope being outside the EU why not the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom can survive outside the European Union and opt for a free trade agreement instead. The United Kingdom is pouring Billions of pounds into the EU and it hasn't reaped the benefits.

    Does the EU allow smoking?

  • No Britain shouldn't leave the EU but we should try to re-negotiate our membership. The government should try to regain some powers from Brussels, since it just adds unnecessary bureaucracy to our country. Powers such as the prisoners' right to vote should not be decided in Britain not by Brussels, and it's this aspect of our membership that irritates me.

I think we should get the fuck out. Once and for all.
