Should racist cartoons be destroyed?

Some people get really offended by classic cartoons and demand the should be destroyed. I understand that the shouldn't be shown on public networks or to the youth since old cartoons are still entertaining, but I don't think they should be destroyed. Effort was still put into these animations and animation is not a simple thing. Bosko the Talk-Ink kid was the very first Looney Toon. That has significance doesn't it?

Even if they are destroyed isn't that just pretending that we weren't racist in the 40's?

Offensive cartoons should be destroyed 18
Offensive cartoons should be banned 17
Offensive cartoons should stay off networks 60

Why don't you have any options that say to leave them as is?

Destroying them or banning them would be absolutely ridiculous in any free society. This would be a serious infringment of freedom of speech.

Networks should also have the right ot air them based on the first amendment. If parents don't want their children watching them it is within their right to not let their own children watch them.

I disagree with you that they shouldn't be shown on television. Good or bad, it is part of our cultural history.

    • Networks don't show offensive cartoons (legal or not) because they would lose many sponsors and much of their money. Most networks that show cartoons are aimed towards children. Business suicide.

But in so many cases a cartoon can't even be sold privately because it's banned and that's what bothers me. And the ones that can be sold privately are normally difficult to find and overpriced. And a few others have been destroyed.

Coal Black and the Sebben Dwarves. You don't have to like that cartoon but you shouldn't pretend it doesn't exist.

cartoons arent only for 4 yr olds. offensive cartoons often have ratings that differentiates it from the wiggles etc, and those cartoons are often aimed at a higher age group who dont mind having a laugh at things. kanye west watches family guy :P

We shouldn't control history. We should examine history and work out what it says about our present. We should also allow future generations the right to do the same.

  • I'm not a fan of censorship. The most evil among us practice book burning ceremonies.
Not only is it absolutely impossible to "protect" every living being from offense...but if you never are offended...you don't live in a free society.

I agree, to ban or destroy them would be a lame attempt at re-writing the books of history.

    I vote...

if you find something offensive change the channel.

just because YOU dislike it doesn't mean everyone else has to.
or that they're obligated to see the same things in it you see.

They should stay on TV, Bosko is much more politically correct then Dora, Dora chants about wanting to go to "cocaine island". Bosko is much more innocent.

They should definitely not be banned/destroyed. I would encourage you and anyone to think about them as antique cartoons. Racist implies intent. I do not think that the creators of children's cartoons in the 1930's intended them to be hurtful. I think that intended them to be relevant to society at that point in time. There really is no need to be so embarrassed by our past. We did not personally hold those opinions or stereotypes. I enjoy watching old cartoons/movies to have a better understanding of people from that time.

I hate the idea of people destroying art because they find it offensive.
    Fuck them.
I do not support the creation of racist art, but it it's already been made, then please don't destroy it. It's a historical account if nothing else.

No. It's a part of history and if you sugar-coat it, people will forget. Eventually, history could repeat itself.

Racist, sexist, or any other cartoons like "Coonskin" shouldn't be destroyed. With different ways entertainment is shown to people today (home media, internet), I feel like they should be distributed that way. These cartoons, as offensive as they may or may not be, are important to American history. While Americans may not want to show it, this is how people were presented at the time, and it's important that people can access them. The difference between the comedy today and the comedy then is that now everything is hidden: objectifying women, and other things were up-front then, and I feel like to take these away and pretend they never existed is like saying that the holocaust never occurred.

    They should remain.
People who go around being hurt or offended by anyone else need to just grow the heck up!

Most modern comedy plays on it; it is just different because most modern comedy is an "equal opportunity destroyer" (meaning they will make fun of mannerism of several different types of people instead of focusing in on just one.)

Most people tend to have a sense of humor because they will laugh at jokes made against a group or ethnicity that is not their own. If they are willing to laugh at a joke made at the expense of one ethnicity, they ought to take it with a mild humor when their ethnicity is next on list. It is easier to laugh at them than to get mad. Getting upset just cedes control over yourself to someone else. You allow that person to dictate your mood and in some cases the outcomes of a period of your time. It is easier to just get back with something equally as biting and quip that way, than to go around angry and offended all the time.

    • I don't know if you've seen some of the offensive cartoons but they can get REALLY bad. Racism of 2011 and racism of 1940 were very different. (I wish people would stop saying that it's no different from today) I don't think they should be on networks because they really can hurt somebody emotionally or mentally. Especially children, these cartoons were aimed towards children.

But I don't think they should be destroyed or banned. Like I said there's effort in them and we shouldn't pretend they never existed.

Yes. they should be retained, if for anything else but to remember history. To destroy them is to deny history. Denying history is the first step to forgetting history and those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
But one should not dwell too much on history. Dwelling on history leads to hurt feelings. Look not at the past transgressions, but where the world has gone since that time.

  • Depends on why people think it's offensive. For example Family Guy or South Park could be considered offensive, but they're shown on FX and Comedy Central, which I think is fine.

With Bosko the Talk-Ink kid, I've never seen it, but from pictures I assume it's derogatory to black people? Stuff like that has no place in children's cartoon shows or any TV for that matter, if people find it funny however, it should be broadcast on adult TV channels only, and past certain hours in the day.

So, offensive shows? Keep them. Racist/immoral shows? Ban them from children's networks, and put them on late for any adults that REALLY want to watch them.

    • Even shows like Family Guy have had scripts stopped by their producers. The famous abortion episode?

Maybe in 50 years Family Guy and Southpark will be banned too

      • That's true enough. I think that just because people are offended by something, doesn't mean it's wrong or shouldn't be shown.

They should be kept as history and be legal to buy and own, I don't think they should be shown on TV though.
