It should be legal, with legal prostitution there would be less risk, more safe sex being practiced, the girls would be protected and be able to press charges when a John rapes her. Point being, if a woman honestly enjoys sex work she should be able to make that her career safely.

    • I always thought that myself, it would be safer and more organized if it were legalized in more places.

I don't agree that when they get caught they are treated like second class citizens. (I live in the US) Some of them are forced into prostitution, do drugs, were abused, are homeless/runaways, etc. So I don't agree with it being legal. You never know who you could pick up either. They could have an STD or could become violent. Look at Aileen Wuornos.

I say legalize it. If prostitution was legalized it could be better regulated, and made safer and more convenient for everyone involved. Prostitutes would receive mandatory health check ups and treatment, and they would have more protection from physical violence and/or clients not paying.

Legalizing it would only legitimize a small portion. I don't think it would do anything to decrease the prevalence of what's already there. If anything, I think it would make it less safe because if you regulate something, you have to go and check on it.

What? How would checking on something make it less safe?

Also, is it not better to legitimize some of the prostitution business than none at all? I suspect if those working as prostitutes had the opportunity to work in a safer environment, almost all of them would.

Sorry, I don't think I did a good job of making my point.

Out of all the prostitutes that are out there now, I don't think very many of them would come out of the woodwork to make themselves legal. At the same time that you're checking the ones that are legal, you give the illusion that because it's now legal and they have to get checked, that it would somehow seem safer, when it's only safe if you get with a prostitute who has just been checked.

I see. But what if there were buildings specifically for prostitution? Then, instead of working on the streets, prostitutes would go to that establishment. Then you would know it'd be better regulated and safer.

Yes, actually, I would have to agree that if you had a specific business the way you described, that regulated establishment would be safer and more sanitary than the alternatives.

I went to a club recently and one of the girls that are paid to make us buy more hooked herself to me. Spent a lot of time asking her questions and things. I feel so bad for girls that do this (they prostitute themselves too).

I would just stick to stripping.

I hate to agree with you, but at least this takes place in a licensed establishment. Prostitution could happen anywhere and is really dangerous, not to mention disease and whatever else.

Yeah i mean i couldn't strip but it is a better alternative if you wanna go that route.

I wouldn't strip, either, but that's a far step from prostitution.

It is not self regulated, it is black market. The fact that it is illegal leaves very in way of options of employment. It is dirty and something done in the deep dark, this very fact makes it so dangerous. What is a prostitute to do when she gets beaten up, call the cops?

Secondly it is reasonable to assume that schools would start up to teach courses on prostitution.

A whore should be judged by the same criteria as other professionals offering services for pay -- such as dentists, lawyers, hairdressers, physicians, plumbers, etc. Is she professionally competent? Does she give good measure? Is she honest with her clients?
It is possible that the percentage of honest and competent whores is higher than that of plumbers and much higher than that of lawyers. And enormously higher than that of professors.

If it were legalized there would be no need to getup ate it because companies would self regulate. Companies would not want their prostitutes to pass on std's because their clients could sue. Add to this it would be in the companies best interest to keep their employees healthy. Prostitutes would work for reputable companies and while you could never get rid of stds or prostitutes who carry then, you could reduce their Clint's though

I don't agree. To be a prostitute, all you have to do is accept money for sex. To be a doctor, dentist, and some of the other professions, you have to go to school for a number of years and uphold a set of ethics while you practice your profession. I don't think many prostitutes have any of those morally strong characteristics.

It's illegal now and the self-regulation is the pimps and drug dealers who enforce their rules.
