Should phones be completely banned during schooltime?
Personally, I think schools should actively promote an old-fashioned social climate, and thus ban smartphones from both class and recess.

I agree, but I do worry that the people who'd promote this idea would be a bunch of dusty old technophobes who know nothing about technology and so would be ignorant to its benefits. Like I think books, and writing with pens/paper, should be completely replaced with laptops. Writing by hand is an obsolete skill that's only necessary for writing the occasional note. And the benefits of being able to edit text in a word processor to whatever arrangement you like completely overpowers handwriting. Plus nowadays we can use multimedia to help teach these subjects to kids, which is a far more engaging and effective method of teaching than just forcing them to stare at some dry old text on a page.
I think they are a big distraction to learning but have become a necessary part of life. I don't see why they can't have them during breaks from study. I won't be too happy sending my teens off to school with no means of contacting them. The world has changed since I was a kid.
I agree, when I was in highschool there was no phone service in the school (this was before messaging ran on data) and I shudder to think how much worse my social skills would be had I not been forced to talk to people.
Sometimes I wish phones and computers werent so popular because everyone use to hangout more
