Should people have a driving test every 5 years?

Do you think that for the safety of people around the road, people should be made to take driving tests every so often (as in 5-10 years) and more often as they grow older?
As in people have to pay a certain amount for just a quick test, not a full on proper test, but just a test to see if they can drive straight, park the car, reverse and stuff like that.
Also comment if you think they should have eyesight tests and things like that.

Yes they need to be re-tested every 5-10 years 102
No people should not be re-tested 30
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Howza bout people 65 yrs old and over take the test every five years. I think people who are incapable of driving are often reported and can be looked into and tested on that basis. I have better shit to do with my time. Besides, the gov't is already an overbearing bitch.

    • I don't think the government does much about it. I have seen so many old people that cannot drive properly. In fact I get people of all ages on the road that cannot even reverse. Because I live down a country lane and when I meet a car I always have to reverse as they can't even do that. It shows people are not being properly tested as well.

all i can say is ... 1984 was my last accident .. since 84, i been accident free with no tickets to speak .. my record is absolutely 100% perfect ... i have more miles going backwards then most of you's have going forward ... but it gets even better ... i'm also a truck driver who puts on 400+ miles per day, averaging around 2,000 miles per week, not to mention the car i drive too .. and guess what? (i'm 50) ... AND in a D.O.T law, we get eye tested, hearing tested, a finger up our ass and the whole nine yards for a physical .... think i need to be tested? ..... another words, those who fail to drive right SHOULD BE TESTED .. FUKING GET IT?

The problem with older people is their hearing, sight and the fucking DRUGS they take!! They simply do not understand that they can't take morphine and drive. And the drugs just compound their visual and hearing defecits. They don't realize that drugs prescribed by a doctor can be intoxicants, they really don't.

Depends if they have had several accidents or have not been driving during the last 5 years.

I think elderly people should probably have a reflex test every couple of years or so. I LOVE elderly people, but their reflexes can go. It happens, there's nothing wrong with it, it's just nature's curse. But they can endanger themselves and others if they are driving with terrible reflexes/eyesight.
And I think teenagers/young drivers should be given rigorous tests every few years until they're in their 30s! Teenage drivers are some of the worst I've ever encountered! They pass their test, and then they decide to go terrorizing the roadways.

Other than the initial test testing drivers after they've been driving for 20, 30, or 40 years is a waste. Sure they'll do the correct thing for the test, but they will revert right back to their old bad habits. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

    • I asked if you thought we should have tests for if it is safe for people to drive. So if people have difficulty seeing they should not be driving as they cannot see the road. Or if they struggle driving properly and only passed the first test on pure luck. What you are trying to say is about drivers that generally don't care. We have a method of that which is the policing system (not that it always works).

Every ten years sounds reasonable. There are plenty of people on the road who don't seem to quite know what they're doing.
