Should parents give their kids interesting, unique, or rare names?

Yes, common names are boring and unusual names are more personal. 67
No, giving a kid a name that stands out should be child abuse. 35
Depends, some unique names are better than others. 181
We should revive old names that are "real" but are unused now. 34

I can't really understand why some people here in Finland like to name their kid "Urpo". That literally means "douchebag". Yeah, it's interesting and rare, and I'm sure the kid will have fun time in school with a name like that.

Some celebrities give their children such ridiculous names for media attention.

I think it depends. I mean, names like 'Facebook' (Google it) is just setting up your child for bullying. Or naming your son 'Harry' when his last name is 'Bottoms' or 'Butts'.

But, there are some exotic names, or names you don't hear too often. I wouldn't give up my name for everything, because one thing you don't really hear it at all, the second thing is I like it.

No child should have to suffer through life with a weird name. My name is only common in a foreign country. Don't make your kid go through life having to tell people how to pronounce their name. It's awful.

Give any name, as long as it doesn't get the kid bullied, I personally like a mixture of the unique and traditional names

It depends on the name itself, some names are just begging for bullying (my real family name, for example). Calling your daughter "Seven" like the Beckhams did is ridiculous, because it serves no symbolic meaning other than to get media attention.

I almost got one. I guess it'd have been a conversation starter but I'd have wondered as a kid why my parents gave me a name no-one else had.

Names are so personal. What'd be nice is if you went by the name your parents gave you up until the age of 18 and then this became your middle name, with you choosing a first name that you'd live with for the rest of your life.

I'm a labor & delivery RN. Trust me, I've seen some HORRIBLE names over the years. I usually don't even ask people what they're naming their baby b/c I don't have a good "poker-face".
    My general rules-of-thumb are simple...

#1) Can I pronounce it? --- Nobody likes to constantly correct people.

#2) Can I spell it? --- Stick with a normal variation. ie: Ann or Anne. Don't try to spell them in weird, unique ways. For instance, I've seen the name "Uneek" pronounced "unique". Serioulsly??!!

#3) Is it vulgar? --- There should be laws about some names. I once had a baby named "Shithead" (I wish I were joking). The mom pronounced it "Sha-heed". We kept trying to talk her into spelling it differently. And no, she wasn't from another country, & yes, English was her 1st language!

  • I have a weird name that says a lot about who my parents were when I was born. It doesn't bother me though. I was only teased during the first day of Kindergarten and I don't even remember it (my parents told me about it).

I agree though, some people take it way too far. My sister-in-law is friends with someone who named her three sons after Star Wars characters.

My nephew's name is Daylan, which I thought was sort of neat name. he was named after his great-grandfather.

My grandma had a dream and took my name from it, forced my mom to name me it when she was just 6 weeks pregnant. I am torn -- it makes me unique, its pretty sounding, but its too black, weird, and I fear its one of the reasons I have a hard time applying for jobs. But maybe in my future career it will be a positive as an artist.

Some unique names can be awesome. I met a guy who's name was Trinity Cloud. That just sounds pretty freaking epic and I'm pretty sure he sports that name proudly. On the other hand I met a kid who's name was Jasmine. His parents must have just hated this kid because I see in no way Jasmine can substitute for a guy's name as well and with how people are today, I'm pretty sure someone must have given him grief for it.

There are pros and cons to this aren't there
    Pros
You stand out from the crowd (obviously brilliant if you like that kind of thing and love attention)
You always have a story to tell about how you got your name.
You know that it is highly unlikley that an other person in your work school will share your name.
    Cons
An unusual name will bring attention which some people do not like.Always having to explain how you came by your name and what it means.
For parents if you want to give your child a middle name then an un usual name maybe hard to get any thing to go with it (eg: Ariadne May just sounds daft, Sorry.)xx

Names usually go in cycles of popularity - names like 'Duncan' or 'Myrtle' usually are now grandparents. But they'll become popular once again.

I think Amethyst sounds nice, and can be shortened to "Amy". Sounds much better than "Seven" or "Nevaeh"

Or... you could name the kids after British monarchs, then you could tell them the name has royal significance.

My name (Bethan) isn't really unique, it's quite common in here in Wales, but I lived in Scotland for a while and people kept calling me Bethany (which pissed me right off) and my name is never on any of that personalized stuff either....

  • I like unique names.

Not anything like Keyyisha de shawn or anything MADE UP.

No, like names that MEAN something. As in Amethyst(gemstone0, or Katniss(plant), or some other name that exists as something other than a name.

My name for example is Destiny.

I think it depends on the name. How the heck goofy is it gonna be? They shouldn't give them a name that will give other kids ideas to make fun of them for it. The parents need to realize that it has to be a name they can grow up with. Sometimes parents name a baby something that seems real cute when they're a baby, but hows it gonna be when they're in high school or college?

Its gotta be strong, maybe not common, but good enough for them to introduce themselves when they're older without getting weird looks.

I was given a very common first name and middle name(Lauren Elizabeth), so I never really had to worry about that kinda stuff. Although, I remember all throughout school there was always at least 2 or 3 others who shared my same first name in my class. That kinda sucked! Sometimes you wondered, 'are they talking about me or her?'. Even at my work there's at least 5 others with my same name in the building. One of them I work with everyday. Shes a couple years older, though, so they call me the little one. hehe

To be honest with you, if I could change my name I would not, I really like the name that I was borned with and it also sounds good to me; {my front and middle names}, with my married last name.

Diane Elizabeth Thompson then my last name changed to Hoekstra.
