Should it be more stringent on ingredients in food?

I find it amazing that portion sizes are smaller but not the amount of sodium or sugar in the product itself. So my idea would be if the FDA actually cared enough, there should be an ingredient ban and also a reduction of sodium, sugar and other ingredients. (ex. Banning on MSG, saccharin, Aspartame) When I eat, I eat because I would like to be full a long time, not starving. My question is simple. Should there be more stringent on what is permitted and prohibited substances in food?

Yes, there should be more regulation 24
No, there should not be more regulation 16

Absolutely, but these large companies have more clout than us as individuals. It is disgraceful behaviour - while at the same time the government search for cures for cancers. If they stopped allowing us to be fed this crap, they wouldn't have to look too far!

Yeah, way to kill personal freedom. It is up to the individual to make responsible choices. We do not need more government control, nor do we need to live in a nanny state. What else would you like the government to do for you?

    Embrace your freedom of choice.

Maybe not a ban on, for example, a certain amount of salt or sugar, but perhaps an increase in tax on profits from very unhealthy food. This would increase the price on this food to the consumer, making it less attractive to the consumer.

I'm not sure about regulation but certainly better food labelling. The UK recently underwent a round of this with a traffic light system showing how much bad stuff is in food.

As a vegetarian, though, I'd very much like to know the likelihood that animal products are in my food. Many food additives are from animal sources and no-one tells us. It wasn't until I became veggie that I thought things like bread, beer, cheese, chocolate were veggie-friendly. Turns out they're not.

Only if the ingredients are inherently life-threatening or similar. People have the right to eat what they want otherwise.

    Obviously you're reading the label.

If you still consume the product then the burden of responsibility is on YOU not the government.

We need to start owning up to our own actions and using self control... instead of expecting the government to do everything for us.
