Should is it normal have a "block" feature?

You "block" a user so their posts become invisible and/or they can't respond to any of yours.

Instead of giving attention, this is a way to ignore someone more effectively. And if they make a new account, one click will spare you from whatever was excreted forth from that one. They can continue, but you have the option to view the rubbish, or not.

If you want to reply to a post of someone that's blocked you, you can write @user in your comment. They won't see it, but you can still make your point.

Is it a good idea or a bad idea?

My opinion was that if you don't like someone, just ignore them. Get over it and move on...it's not hard, deal with it ya pansy.

But now, I'm not so sure...
There are times I would definitely use this feature, were it available. What do you think?

Good idea! 11
I might use it, but it might also ruin the site... 3
It's a bad idea because 2
There already IS a block feature ya eeediot 1
Other 1
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

100% would use this feature. I'd rather 5 good commenters compared to 27 fake commenters.

Not with the way this website is currently configured to accept Internet traffic, no.

How do you know what user you are blocking if their post isn't visible in their profiles. You'd have to block posts you don't like which will in turn block said user but you won't know who thats is. Does anyone think about this or it's just "a good idea". It isn't going to happen the site would have to be overhauled and might as well be called FaceBook2.0

    • Now I understand what you were saying. I should have written "comments" instead of "posts" in the OP - sorry for the confusion.

Blocking a users posts and comments would probably go hand in hand anyway, but I imagine someone would block a user based on their comments, rather than their posts, which are usually fairly anonymous anyway.

    • Do you not see usernames attached to posts on your device?

        Upon further inspection...

1)What is your definition of "Block"?

2)When you use the word "post" are you referring to a users OPs or comments?

3)"Instead of giving attention" is this in reference to troll/accounts? (important for context only)

If you can answer 1-2 for me I can more accurately address your question.

I see usernames attached to OPs and comments attached to usernames but some usernames OPs exist but aren't attached.

        • 1) Block means hide all comments from the blocked account. A blocked users comments would be visible to everybody except the person who has blocked them. AND the blocked account cannot reply to the "blocker's" comments (or their posts - questions, polls - I think).

          2) Sorry, when I said "posts" above; I actually meant comments - my mistake.

So ...without too much thought, I would say that yes, blocking someone would prevent them from being able to respond to questions (OPs, polls) posted by someone who has blocked them (as well as that users comments).

They can still reply to questions (OPs) from users who haven't blocked them. But their answers will not be visible to those that have blocked them.

          (Apologies if this is confusing)

And 3) Yes, that was referring to troll accounts. If people can literally make trolls invisible, they won't really have anything to complain about.

And lastly, you "see usernames attached to OPs" - do you mean in a person's profile?
I see a username attached to every comment.
But OPs (questions/polls) don't have any username attached.

Is that the same? Just checking; I didn't fully understand that last sentence.

Anyway... if it leads to everybody blocking everybody else then the site would just become frustrating to use and it would be a bad idea. So, I'm not sure if it's a terrible idea or not.

It looks like what is being proposed is a "compartmentalized block" similar to FaceBook. This would completely cut off the person you blocked. Your OP might as well not even show up on their search (but would have to)

Outside of your OP his comments would be invisible to you but unless he blocked you yours wouldn't be to him. You may find the person you blocked responding to your comment and someone responding to his comment in the thread in reference to you but wouldn't know because you blocked him. Which is essentially censoring oneself from information they don't want to hear because although you can block someone you cannot block the person having a conversation in the threads with the person you blocked. Your name would be mentioned by the person having a conversation with the person you Blocked. If this happened and you saw this I'm sure you'd want to unblock the person you blocked to see what hes saying about you.

            "User names attached to OPs"

There is an option in your account that allows your OPs to be visible to those who enter your account through your user name. If enabled they would be visible above your comments.

This wouldn't even begin to address the troll issue. It'd be like trying to kill every ant in a pile with an ice pick.

Do you remember whose comment you deleted on this post earlier or the information contained within it? That would have been a much better approach IMHO.

Back to Crysis 3 I go! Almost half finished

As I said you can see a persons OP through their profile. Click my troll dick. Ice pick.

              Ok, im done.

            • That's right, you could see a conversation between an invisible user and someone else - but not on your comment; I don't think they'd be able to respond on that entire thread (even by replying to someone else) - but I'm not sure about that.

Even so, you could still see a one-sided conversation on another comment thread or post.

Not sure about facebook, I was basing this on yahoo answers...but then again, who really wants to steal ideas from YA...?

Ants and ice-pick? - Nah, I don't think it'd be quite that bad. Deleting comment by comment is ice-pick territory.
This would be more of a short hand tool for wiping out an entire account. Maybe I'm underestimating, but I think there's max 5 legit troll accounts on any one day.

I think it addresses the issue, but if not, at the very least it takes away any reason to complain about trolls: "Just block them".

Was that not yours I deleted before? Something about "the symptom or the disease" or some shit, I found it very offensive anyway.
Actually, I think I just Derren Browned myself by having "block" on the brain, so I blocked the first crappy response I could.

Anyway, you probably don't care about this anymore, but thanks for giving it some thought. I do appreciate it.
              Good luck with Crysis 3.

  • It could be used decently but at the end of the day you'll end up only having like four or five users to comment on your posts.

Meh. I wouldn't care either way at this point.

    • Well yeah, if you block everyone...
But atm, I think it's the reverse - four, five accounts (and even less users) who are block worthy at any one time.

Apathy might be the better choice though.
