Should i take it

I am 22 years old and I have the opportunity to work as a production assistant for a fashion show but the catch is I won't be paid anything because they are on a tight budget. I am grad student & I have never had a job (I'm trying). My grad program is mostly independent research so I am always at home alternating between being depressed and attempting to study so I figure it will be good for me to get some work experience & exposure of some sort but the fact that I won't be getting paid is really bothering me. Besides volunteering for charity etc does anyone really work for free? Is it worth it? Should I take?

Yes, the exposure will be great 16

    Do it!

It's a great learning opportunity. And unless you're in dire need of money that you can get elsewhere, you're not losing anything by participating.

Nothing's worse than giving a resume where you had zero experience in anything. This would totally be worth adding.

I also completely disagree with My02cents's comment. Declining an offer out of spite is ridiculous, especially as a young person with zero work experience. Why is volunteering at an animal shelter OK, but volunteering at a fashion show is not?

It's like Edison said, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." Who's to say that if you go and do a good job at this show that they won't call you to do another gig, but this time for a good pay?

    I would say NO.

Nothing in life is for free, not even experience. You would be just a gopher and if it`s not in your interest as a permanent job, then you would gain nothing by accepting this offer.

Rather work for the animal shelter for free where you can really make a difference in an animal`s life.

I don't see you have anything better to do. It's actually an opportunity to get something of consequence on your resume and it would be worth it for only that, never mind the chance to get out of the house and actually do something.
Don't look at it as working for free, but getting and education you don't have to pay for. Reality, unlike what My02cents seems to think, means starting at the bottom and being a "gopher" could be a step to something better, if you can be an exceptional "gopher".
