Should i stop using the internet because of bigots ruining my views?

I notice that online people are much more racist, bigoted and vulgar than in "real life". In my college, everyone is normal and generally friendly.

Online, there are so many people trying to bully and threaten you just because you are the wrong race/religion/age/sex/ect.

It's really starting to get to me and ruin my impression of strangers and make me depressed to meet anyone new. I'm always afraid they might be one of those bigots from the internet. I was thinking of just not using the internet anymore.

Also, does anyone know any good softwares to block comment forms? I used to have that herp-derp plugin for youtube, but it doesn't work anymore.

Yeah, the other poster is right, it's a loud-mouthed minority of losers.

Next time you see one of their posts, just imagine what their reality is: They are still living at home, overweight and sitting in their bedroom wearing just black socks, tighty whities and a 90's punk rock band t-shirt. They are surrounded by gamer cheat books, comics, dirty dishes and dirty clothes. They're trying to grow a beard, but all they've got are random wisps of hair. They don't have a job, but applied at McDonalds three weeks ago, still waiting for a call back. The only real girlfriend they've ever had is their right hand. Their gamer persona is a mighty warrior and they have multiple usernames on blog sites and constantly surf them making rude comments and in desperate need to see that someone has "liked" one of these comments. No one has, so they "like" their own comments using their other usernames.

So, you're better than that. Just chuckle about this vision of them and ignore them.

We are all powerless over trolls, try to see this as an exercise in distress tolerance. Use trolls to your advantage to build up your emotional distress tolerance muscles.

    • I'd rather just knock them the hell out. Unfortunately, that is impossible when they are thousands of miles away. In person is so much easier to deal with.

Physically strong bullies bully on the play ground, Narcissists bully in settings like work, job, home. Cowards who have poor self esteem but want to pretend they are big bully online. This is how life works. Its the sad reality.

        • What is the benefit of pretending to be a bully online? What do you get out of it except wasted time? This is something I don't understand. I personally would rather spend my time playing games or reading than endlessly commenting and stalking forums.

Low self esteem feeds the ego. Its very simple. I not saying its right but that is why they do it.

  • I wouldn't let them change your views or internet usage. Besides, there is much more good the internet has to offer than bad if you look in the right placed IMO.

  • I've actually noticed the exact opposite.

People online (with this site being an excellent example) are generally very PC and aggressively toe the party line on racial issues with supreme zeal. Catching someone voicing an unpopular view on race (not counting websites specifically tailored to such a purpose, obviously) is relatively uncommon.

Conversely, it has always been a regular occurrence for me to observe Whites making explicitly racial comments IRL.

By the way, I live in a multicultural city in the American North.
