Should i go back out with my ex?

I am still in love with my ex. And he told me that he still loves me.

I was the one who broke up with him. I broke up with him because he didn't treat me like I was his girlfriend. He was embarrassed by me and he never spoke to me in public. When I sent him a long message on why I wanted to break up with him, he responded with "Bye". So I thought that he hated me and never actually loved me because he let me go so easily. He didn't fight for me.

But he did explain to me that he only said that to "respect my decision". and he said that he would take me back any time. I don't know if I should believe that or not.

Should I ask him back out or should we just remain friends?
