Should i get a tattoo to hide my cutting scars?

I've got scars from cutting myself about 4 years ago on both of my upper thighs. I find i can't wear cloths that show this area, and this can be quite problematic during the summer months. They aren't exactly ugly, but its pretty obvious what they are, and now that I've moved on I'm wondering whether or not i should cover them with a tattoo.

Any suggestions??

    How about scar cream?

If you go with the tattoo route, do lots of research first. Pick a design that you won't live to regret years down the road. A tattoo that you wouldn't be embarrassed about having when you're in your 60's.

On second thought, Dermablend should work just fine. If it can cover up Rick Genest's tattoos than, it should have no problem with covering up your scars.

I hate Dermablend (my mom made me use it to cover up scars for my 8th grade graduation) but that stuff really does work... From personal experience, (if they arent super deep) they will fade away (and i also noticed for me) that sun exposure ie: natural sun tanning will help them fade.

You can lighten the scars with certain creams and stuff. You can also design the tattoo to sort of follow the lines, depending on the scars and type of tattoo you want of course, to make them blend in a bit more. You will probably still be able to see them though. Maybe. How bad are the scars?

    • they're quite flat now, almost consistent with the skin around them they used to be raised, i used bio oil for a while and it helped a bit. On one leg they're white, on the other they appear redish and are slightly more raised. They also go about a third of the way down each thigh.

I don't think tattoos will hide your scars.. the skin of your scar is different than your regular skin.

Why not just let people see your scars? It's a part of your history. History that you actually won.
If I saw somebody had scars it would instantly make me treat them gentler.
You will get people who will try lecture you or judge your scars.. but mostly people will sympathise.

    • unfortunately most people just judge or look at you strangely...when your getting to know someone, if they find out too early they think that's all you are and i'd rather have them get too know me and see me for who i am rather than a reaction to things that happened to me years ago.

I don't want sympathy, i don't need it anymore, i just wanna be able to wear what i want without people staring or asking questions.

I didn't think you could tattoo scar tissue.

Get so e creams, likes the others suggested. Comfrey is a great skin healer. Then just be proud of who you are. I doubt anyone will have the balls to say anything about it.

I don't think the issue is whether other people will comment on the scars, it's how OP feels about visibly moving on from the time of her/his life when h/she inflicted them.

I think tattoos would be a great idea if they do in fact cover scar tissue, if not there are some other suggestions here to try.

Can scars be surgically removed or erased? I'd be surprised if they couldn't be in this age of technology, but I might be wildly wrong.

Tattooing over a scar doesn't hide it like you'd think. In my opinion they just draw attention to that area.

If they are bothering you what you should firstly try is "bio oil", it is relatively cheap and it is absolutely fantastic for fading or even totally erasing scars/strech-marks etc. I wish you all the best of luck, congratulations on being able to move past self harm, you should be so proud of yourself. Try that first.. and heck, if you feel like you still want tattoos, then get tattoos.... tattoos are awesome :) x

    • i do, my point is that im getting sick of it. I cant wear any decent bathing suits, and i deserve the right to wear what i want without that kind of stigma

I don't think tattooing over them would hide them very well. I could be wrong.
