Should i apply to be a tatoo artists?

I do nothing but draw and that seems to be the one thing I was always naturally very good at. I draw, paint, and write and I have moderate skills in other fields but I excel no where aside from art. I am over 18 and have been drawing since I was 3, writing since I was 8 and and started painting at 14 and I have won contests for my work even some of my recent work. I have piles of sketchbooks so I wont have an issue making a portfolio and right now its hard to get a job and I been stuck at shit jobs I just been awful at or not getting paid a lot. However I am concerned since a lot of jobs are making people remove tattoos that the tatoo field is not good right now. Should I just say fuck it and go for it anyways or would this be a bad idea?

Yes, do it 28
No, don't do it 10
other 5
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

A couple of my good friends are tattoo artists, and it's not just a job you apply for. Especially if you can't spell it.

  • The tattoo field is better now than it has ever been lol.

They've tripled in demand in the last decade, so I wouldn't let that be the reason to put you off if you want to do it.

So get some equipment and start practicing. Drawing is one thing, you can erase or start over. You only get one shot with a tattoo.

I say go for it. However:

It's a lot more complex, and you will have a lot of things to think about.

I'm pretty sure you would have to go on training courses and health and safety courses.

If you plan to be self eomployed you also gotta think about the cost of the equipment and rental of a parlor. As well as marketing expenses, and no one will have heard of you, so you won't loads of clients straight away.

Anyway with dedication, you could definatly make it, it sounds like an interesting job with little stress and probably pretty good $$$$ GOOD LUCK

Look into it, why not? It's good to use your strengths and follow your passions. I wish I'd been more confident about that at 18. However, sorry to have to point this out, but spell tattoo properly in any applications/correspondence or whatever. Tattoo, not tatoo.

I doubt that doing the tattoos would be a very lucrative profession; there are a lot of very fine tattoo artists out there and not so many customers.
But you might be able to sell your designs to the parlors.

If that's what you want to do then do it. People will always be getting tattoos regardless of how many jobs are making them get rid of them. As long as you have people who want body art tattoo artist will always be in business.

I'm not sure if drawing/painting skills would translate directly over to tattoo artistry. I'm sure there are extra things to consider when working with how the needle reacts to the skin.

If you are REALLY want to get into this field, I would say that the first step would be to get a tattoo and tell the tattoo artist that you're interested. Ask him/her how he/she got started.

To be honest though, I don't think there is any hope of you becoming a tattoo artist unless you are REALLY into getting tattoos. Something to consider is that getting a tattoo is a really intimate thing, and it requires a lot of trust between the artist and the person he/she's working with. This isn't like a haircut or something where someone just walks in and plops down in the char while you go nuts.

Of course I won't say no flat out though. Everyone has to start somewhere. If this is something you really want to do, you should find a way.

    • Painting and drawing skills are needed for tattooing. Most tattoo artist are extremely talented artists and can paint and draw extremely well. So it does translate. However getting a tattoo is not exactly like painting or drawing. Its a totally new media you must learn. Though that goes for every media. Some might be better at some medias but they all require some amount of artistic talent.

Tattoos are a good example of low life. Don't be a part of it. Tattoos are disgusting.

I say if you have a talent like that, Go go for it. I had The same Guy do like 4 of mine but the other guy did the other two. But it was apparent. Which one of the two had more artistic talent. (By the way, Ignore that nasty thing, Counterfeit.Circus), (He likes to start trouble. and annoy people. He did that shit to me. And I reported his stupid ass. Anyway The guy in the shop said the same thing as you. That he started with just sketching and drawing. Now the money at that place is Rollin in. When I was there last at least 50 customers came in. Some were for piercings, But most were for Tattoos. What ever you decide. Good luck!

Tatoos are disgusting, especially on women. Don't assist people with disfigurement. I hope everyone is sorry in the future when they have an ugly, blurry blue blob under their scarred skin. The neck ones are really classy.

Look here fool, Im a woman and I got six Tatoos, And I spent quite a bit of money on them. I'll admit I don't like the neck ones either. But mine is on my arms, shoulder, and legs. People like it because it is Body Art. We are just adorning our bodies. You don't have to like it. But you should respect people who do. Ok amigo.
