Do they have to? No. Should they? Yes. If you are applying for a job or something, definitely.
Ofcourse, they shouldn't be "forced" to but out of their own best interests they should.
Also want to add in that emos aren't the only ones who cut.
I did for a long time. I now see them as a part of the endeavor it took to get where I am and to where I am going. They are a part of me.
What bothers me is that sometimes strangers spontaneously touch my scars out of curiosity. I usually respond with, "oh, yes. By all means. Is there any other part of me you felt like groping?"
To answer your question, no they should not have to. However, if they choose to that is of nobodies concern.
Just like tats and piercings, some things don't play well when you need a job or need to keep one. If you want a job bad enough, it would be my guess that you'll cover any scars, tats or piercings you think might prevent you from being hired. Of course, you can wait for years for a crappy job, if you insist in "being true to yourself". Some may not like it, but that is the truth of the world, right now.
Its kind of sad that tattoos and piercings are considered something that needs to be hidden when applying for a job. I have many visible tattoos and piercings (and no, I'm not a faggy emo kid) and I'm actually a really responsible, reliable person, but sadly many employees have not and will never have the pleasure of knowing that becausse judging a book by its cover seems all too popular nowadays. I do agree with your statement though, anything considered socially unacceptable probably needs to be hidden away, including attention seeking scratches on the wrists.
Calling people who struggle with self harm "emos" kind of belittles their condition.
i know everyone that scars themselves has there own reasons for it but i just don't understand why at all. there permanent!
