Should assisted suicide be legal?

As the topic says: Should assisted suicide be legal or kept illegal?

Say you are 95 years old with Cancer, do you want the choice to end it? Or should you be made to suffer while being drugged up on pain killers?

No, If you try to kill yourself you should go to jail 13

It's my right to live how I want, and it's my right to die how I want. Fuck anyone who says otherwise.

IDRGAF BUT I DO KNOW ONE THING: RELIGIOUS FOLKS WOULD VOTE AGAINST IT BEING LEGALIZED BECAUSE THEY'LL BE SAYING THAT THE PERSON IS HELPING THE SUICIDAL PERSON GO TO HELL!

I always thought PAS was moronic and In humane. Until I watched my grandfather waste away from lung cancer. He was begging my mother to let him overdose on his morphine because he was in so much pain and so miserable and dehydrated. Now I think, if you have a diagnosed terminal illness, assisted suicide should be a viable option to dying a slow painful death.you tell me which is inhumane. Watching someone die a horrible slow death because it's "natural" or having the inevitable pass with an injection in a split second?

Going to jail for trying to kill yourself sounds a little over the top, being put into a hospital should be the place, not jail.
It's you killing yourself, not killing another person, yes I do care about the people who attempt suicide over constant bullying, abusive parents. But if you kill yourself over like a breakup, I feel no pity, maybe a little, but not much.

Anyways, I don't think you should go to jail for that.

It would be nice if this was worked into Hospice so that people with terminal illnesses could pass in a way of their choosing vs. waiting out a long agonising death.

I mean not as drastic as the Suicide booth in Futurama but something akin to what was in Soilent Green would be cool.

People who said No are idiots. I honestly believe if someone wants to die then the government should do something and let them kill themselves maybe even help but not arrest them, that'll make them want to kill themselves even more. But its wrong how people get in trouble if they dont wanna live. Like my mother told me about this one guy who assisted suicides all the time (cant remember his name) but he constantly gets in trouble but he helps people that wants to die. I believe recently he was just released from prison again but idk if hes helping people do that stuff anymore.

IF I was 95 years old with cancer I would just tell the doc to shoot me up with as much morphine as they could so I could die painlessly.

    Maybe lower the population

But it would give people a dignified way to end their lives instead of rotting away with disease and mental illness.

It would reduce the strain on the economy as well.

Euthanasia completely ethical in many situations, watch the documentary The Suicide Tourist for a good example.

All suicide should be legal, provided the person is in the right state of mind.

At the end of the day, it's your life, and you can do what you want with it. If you're suffering, then you shouldn't really be questioned. Personally (I am athiest) if 'God' believes suicide in any way at all is wrong, well listen to this.

It's like God is saying, "suffer with what Iv'e given you, and if you can't handle it, you will be banished to hell and never forgiven"

Yeah the sadistic Christian God would do something like that...he gets his kicks out of sending people to hell for minor crap.

What would you think of a parent sending their child to a place like hell for some of the things God does??? People would put that parent in jail.

    Hey Mizeka:

I am with you, I too am saved with Christ as My Saviour and it is He who has the last say about our lives, and suicide is wrong in His eyes. Thanks so much for saying my statement and God be with you always.

I don't understand why a sane person would contemplate suicide. I do think we should have the right to do whatever we feel is necessary to our own body but how does a sane person believe that suicide is a necessary activity for the day? Unless you are talking about self sacrifice for the greater good. Are you willing to take your own life so that others can live?

And as for doctor assisted suicide, let people who are suffering bow out gracefully. Just because technology can keep you technically alive, it does not mean it should.

It should be legal but with a whole raft of caveats, checks, and measures.

It really would hinge upon your medical prognosis and the level of pain and discomfort you would be subjected to on a daily basis and indefinitely into the future. They shoot horses, don't they?

    • Ok here is another example.

Say you are 30, you are tested by psychologists to be totally sane. Yet you calmly want to end your life. You have no disease and are not in any pain physically or mentally. Nor are you depressed.

Who or what has the right to deny you your wish?

Whom ever this is, if they exist, means they have more control over your life than you...do they not?

So I guess the root of the question is....who has more rights over your life than you??

Your question sounds like you are asking for society to sanction and to support a personal decision to end a life? Society is made up of rules. Society will sanction and assist in a suicide provided that the person meets various health criterion. Society may assist someone in their suicide if medical professionals deem that the person will not be able to sustain a viable life. Society will also assist in ending a life if the person poses a serious threat to society.

If someone really wants to end their life, there are millions of ways to do it without the assist or the approval of society. I am not going to go into all of the ghastly details of how to achieve this. I am not sure why you are asking about ending the life of someone who is perfectly healthy...So many people want to live at all costs. It seems to be a bizarre contrast.

        • Not actually sanctioned....but not condemned.

I say if John Doe wants to die [for any reason] he should not have to do so by some drastic measure that is often violent and messy. John should be able to do so in a more peaceful calm manner that is fitting to crossing over. Give him a room to his own choosing music, scenery etc. and let him pass peacefully at his own time in his own way.

Instead John has to jump in front of a train, or blow his head off or jump out of a window 15 stories high.

        @Anonymous Poll Creator:

That depends really on your religious standpoint. For example, I am a Christian and I do believe in God. I think people have lots of control over their lives, but God has the last word in this matter.

However, I still think that people who are in great physical pain or just can't go on (many great personal problems), should be allowed to commit a suicide. God will then decide their fate.

Of course you will see this just as nonsense, if you're an atheist, but try to consider this viewpoint too. :)

(PS: Not assuming that you're an atheist or trying to insult/argue/whatever.)

It depends on whether the person are able to do it themselves as if they are then that is their choice and their life, the last thing you want is assisted suicide being legal and people just killing people off and claiming that person wanted to. However if someone is really in pain or at a point where they cannot do anything themselevs then it should be allowed for somebody to assist their death. Perhaps they should have medical doctors who are allowed to do this instead of just any person.
