Share a recording of your voice

Here is a recording of my voice. The text I'm reading is from 'The Seagull' by Chekov:

"I am alone. Once in a hundred years my lips are opened, my voice echoes mournfully across the desert earth, and no one hears. And you, poor lights of the marsh, you do not hear me. You are engendered at sunset in the putrid mud, and flit wavering about the lake till dawn, unconscious, unreasoning, unwarmed by the breath of life. Satan, father of eternal matter, trembling lest the spark of life should glow in you, has ordered an unceasing movement of the atoms that compose you, and so you shift and change for ever. I, the spirit of the universe, I alone am immutable and eternal."

Please share a recording of your voice. You could read a paragraph from a book or a poem or the play excerpt that I read. I know some of you are underwhelmed by the idea but I haven't heard anyone's voice yet as I'm one of the newer members. So would be really interesting to hear your voices and accents.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

So um, I may have had too much fun with this. I said only the first 3 sentences from your text.

In my defense you never specified if you wanted to hear our normal voices or...

Haha. No I wasn't going for Irish. It's probably the batvoice throwing you off. it's difficult to speak properly in it.

I can't access your voiceclip. Did you take it off? No takebacks!

Should be there...I didn't take it off! I'm guessing you're British then, probs English as I didn't hear any American twang there. Am I right?

Ah, my bad. Seems like Soundcloud requires a signup to view that link. You have a very tranquil voice. You could do audio books. I'd fall asleep to them.

I'll only tell you this. I have a Northern British *and* a General American accent. Which one's real, which one's fake? Are they both real? Are they both fake? If only there was a way to know...

I remember when dappled and co. set up a temporary site for IIN users to submit a recording of their voices.

It was pretty interesting comparing the voices I imagined users to have to their real voices :P

Unfortunately the website is down, now.

Your voice is cool, OP :) Who are you?

This is mine. It's a quote from Henry Rollins. On this recording I over-pronounce a bit, definitely more than I usually do, especially at the start. http://vocaroo.com/i/s0evwLhS8Jj0

P.S. I hope a lot of people do this because it's a nice idea and I want to hear all your voices :)

Slightly disappointed you don't have more of a West County twang :D

You need to live a few years in the deepest, darkest parts of The Forest of Dean - then people will definitely be able to place your accent. Oo arrr!

      Nice reading, though :)

      • dom180

I'd like that - plenty of people at school had it, although the town I live in is fairly central and increasingly gentrified too. I like the Forest though, so maybe one day that'll be me.

I've lived mostly in Wales for university for a year and a half now, but I've been living with students from a variety of backgrounds so I'd be surprised if it shows in my accent. It's general enough as it is to show any more influences.

You should post one, if you're up to it :)

        • disthing

Well I didn't get any hint of Scottish - maybe it's because he's enunciating every syllable? His accent sounds very clean to me; English, but I can't pick up on any inflection suggesting where in England.

            • dom180

That's right. I do a short "a" rather than a long "a". Bath is "ba!-th' rather than "bar-th". In my town it's not totally uncommon, but the long, southern "a" is more common. I have other southern accent traits to balance it out though, for example I don't use the glottal stop in the same way my northern family members do (although you wouldn't hear it on this recording as I'm enunciating more clearly than I usually would :P).

Nice! Thank you so much dom180, you saved me...was feeling really awkward. Very cool animated reading, I think I sound a bit monotonous. I imagined you'd have a southern accent. I get a blank with accents sometimes, are you Scottish?

      • dom180

Thanks for what you say about my reading. I had a speech impediment when I was child and my parents took me to see a speech therapist. Speech therapists also teach you how to do public speaking and speak with animation, so that's where that comes from :P

I'm English, from the west country. That is southern in a sense but it's quite a rural accent, and I also have some northern in my accent which I get from my dad :P It's quite an unusual accent and most people can't place it. Whereabouts are you from? :)

That's what I did on the accent comparison that a lot of us did a while back. I started off by saying that I'm not going to recite anything, I'm just going to ramble and babble and see what happens. And that's what I did. It took a week for me to finally submit it. Then I had it taken off. Then put back on. Then off again :)

Hey, I don't think you should hold that against him. He created that website out of his own free will and time. Without his efforts, the IIN voice experiment would never have came to fruition because I don't have the slightest idea how to make/design a website or anything like that. Yes, it's a bummer that it's no longer up anymore, but I also think it's unfair of us to expect him to have to keep it up too. I'm pretty sure you have to pay for a website domain.

I don't think it is unreasonable for him to have taken it down. Disappointing, sure, but you have to see it from a different perspective.

There are still free web hosting places. I really doubt he paid anything.
