Sex = the quickest way to ruin a friendship?

One line from the 1994 cult film Reality Bites got stuck in my mind where at some point the character of Janeane Garofalo advises her friend Lelaina that 'Sex is the quickest way to ruin a friendship'. Do you agree?

Throwing a beaker of sulfuric acid at them is even quicker.

I used to have a friend of the opposite sex, and I knew he was interested in me but I didn't feel the same way. Two years passed and we hadn't done anything more than friendly hugging. Eventually we had semi-drunk sex, which was alright, and afterwards everything was like normal. After a couple of weeks he began avoiding me though, and now we don't have any contact.

My wife is my best friend. Does this mean if we stop having sex our relationship will get even better?
    Dumb thought!
This is a line from a silly movie and probably shouldn't be incorporated into anybody's guidelines for life.

"You can't ruin friendship with sex. It's like trying to ruin ice cream with chocolate sprinkles." (c)

It's still ice cream, just a different kind. In my view.

  • I have heard this before and can not understand why it would. If anything I would think it would improve the friendship. I just do not get other people's logic sometimes.

Ok so what your're saying is that if you had a well established circle of friends where there were both men and women, everybody should fuck everybody else in order to take your club to the next level...

      • Not necessarily. It all depends on the situation. In my previous sexual encounters I have always felt closer to them afterwards. This obviously would not make sense if either person was unattracted to the other or if somehow drama developed do to the situation.

because sex is supposed to be the death of a friendship, and the start of a relationship. Today's society is forgetting that with our norms changing quickly.

My friendship with my best friend (female) is much better since we started having sex it doesn't complicate anything as we both know it's just sex

    Depends on the friend.

I've had sex with 2 long term female friends, in one case we became much closer friends and still are. In the other case we remained friends but it was at times a little awkward.
