Self harm in order to reach enlightenment. is this insane?

My friend and I are trying to hit bottom based on the idea that you need to destroy yourself in order to accomplish anything. (See: Fight Club; Chuck Palahniuk) Her and I passed a razor back and forth and cut each other. Though we are both aware of how idiotic this is, we did not show remorse for our actions. Due to this, we believe that we are one step closer to hitting bottom. Society teaches us not to do such things, and we directly went against it without feeling what is considered normal for our actions. We feel as though we need an outsiders perspective. Are we insane? Is this "normal?"

Thats so weird because I literally just finished reading fight club like 3 days ago.
I'd say that first of all, if you are referring to a website to ask a question like this about what you guys did then you obviously did not act with a full heart and clear intentions. Tyler was always very direct and never questioned his own actions.
Be careful. Read the afterword by the author if you haven't already...he did not mean for people to go out and do the things you are doing.

Wtf. You are basing your beliefs on Fight Club of all things?! Ugh. Fight Club is a bizarre and convoluted book. In the end, you aren't even certain what kind of mental illness the protagonist has. Well, at least you aren't basing your beliefs on Naked Lunch. That book is fucked up and you can feel your brain cells dy

Do not do it. Self harm is bad, no matter what it's used for. Please stop.

By asking mainstream society if what you're doing is normal you have entirely botched the ideal you are attempting to represent. Other than that, I think you could improve your methods, i.e instead of doing something in privacy to rebel against mainstream culture, just behave any way that you want to. This way you are expressing your ideals and not having to clean blood off of your bathroom floor.

Keep studying this. I believe that you could write a good book on the isolations of societies like you. I would read it.

  • Your basing your self harm off of a movie?this does not sound normal at all. I've self harmed before but not because of anything like that. Self harming for any reason is not entirely normal but it does make you feel better and that is proven but cutting isn't going to get you anywhere. Sorry.

you haven't hit rock bottom by cutting yourself with a razor, you clearly have some other problem whatever it may be and use this as a manner of justifying it

if you want to hit rock bottom, read about ascetic monks

I think you missed the point of the movie Fight Club... It's about trying to not conform to the mainstream and that no matter how hard you try, you are simply following a different mainstream. By cutting yourselves, you are merely staying right up there. Why is it that you don't want to conform to the mainstream? I don't like the mainstream either. I think it is bullshit, but there are certain aspects that you must agree with.

Education is the most effective form of anarchy. Look at Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ghandi. Good luck with what it is you are doing, but please... stop cutting yourselves as this was not the author's intentions.

If you wanna talk about this more, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on what getting away from the mainstream will do. Take care.
