Schizophrenia?!

I keep hearing voices in my head, no matter where I am. It can be at home or in the mall. They call me by my name, not loud, more like they whisper my name in my ear, but when I turn around there is nothing or no one there. Surprisingly enough I only hear these "voices" when I'm sober, not when I'm stoned. It's been going on for a few years now, but it variws in intensity. Any idea whassup with this?

Thank you everyone for your advice, I've been seeing a psychiatrist, with the help of her therapy and a lot of trouble, we sorted it out, my mom's ex boyfriend used to beat me, but I always "forgot" that part of my life, I never thought about it or mentioned it to any one, only to have it come to get me... :-/ But it's going a lot better now :-) thanx everyone

OK, this is a mental disorder. I advise that you see a doctor.

I hear voices too. Luckily they're the nice kind. As long as they're the nice kind, you've no need to worry. If they're the bad kind though, you should maybe see a doctor and talk about it. They might be able to help. Also, don't be ashamed of it. Almost everyone in my family knows I hear voices, but they don't treat me any different than other people. The main thing to know is that you're not alone. =o)

if you are using drugs, be VERY Careful. Weed for example has few ramifcations for your health, but by smoking itm you can intensify your mental issue, and make you worse.

Give up the dope till you get your ehad looked at.

Oh, I forgot! I once started hearing my mother yell at me until I screamed VERY loudly in rage, only to find out that she wasn't there.
No one believed me when I said that my mother was more annoying than most others out there.

All of my voice-hearings have been drug-related. I sometimes hear vague, energetic/repetitive cartoony voices repeat nonsense to me when I'm high on weed, but not more than once or twice have they been clear or realistic. Once, when I was so stupid as to take a huge dose of dimenhydrinate (dramamine, Gravol), I could just about hear voices whenever I wanted to, and I could sometimes vaguely hear them when I got tired for a few months after. Don't underestimate the power of excessive weed smoking, or you'll deserve everything that's coming to get you (get it?)
Every now and again, it's nice to light up a fat skunk joint and laugh at the people who thought they could get away with an ounce-a-day habit.

Yeah, that's schitzophrenia. My friend has it. For some people weed can make it worse and for others better. It seems like it does you good. Just don't mess around with the dosage...

If you are aware of the voices, its possible that its not full blown schizophrenia. It may be a form of personality disorder like my mom :)
man, i just realized my family is very unhealthy lool.
But definately get it checked out. Of course there are other beliefs out there, so look into it, but dont fall for everything u hear.

take care and best of luck

    Okay.

So, I cannot tell from your post whether or not these voices are saying more than your name, or only that.

However, please do not just to any extreme conclusions. You're fine physically, you know that this is happening, and you should approach this from a calm place.

I know I am not an expert, but do not take the advice of these random internet people too seriously (and, sure, you can include me in there.)

However, the guy I've been in love with for more than three years, the person I'm closer to than anyone in the world... he has paranoid schizophrenia, so perhaps you should heed my advice. :]

So. If these voices are consistent and very real sounding, then you are right in thinking that they may be a symptom of schizophrenia. However, if they are ONLY saying your name, you might not be suffering from something as severe as you may think. People can hallucinate without having schizophrenia.

That being said, do not rule it out. If the voices have been happening for a long time, then you truly may have this disorder. Do they ever recommend that you do things? Ask you questions? Give you information, tease you, or converse with you?

If any of those is a yes, then it seems likely that you have paranoid schizophrenia.

Your age is also important. How old are you? How old were you when the voices started? Schizophrenia usually emerges (especially in males) in the late teens to early twenties. This is because schizophrenia is usually a genetic disorder, and at this time in your life, something physically/chemically in your brain triggers the emergence of your disorder.

Rarely, extreme childhood trauma can contribute to or cause paranoid schizophrenia. The combination of genetics and trauma can cause early emergence of the disorder as well, or trauma alone can cause early manifestation.

If you ever see things that you know are not really there, this is also a sign. Even if these things do not take on a certain shape. For example, these hallucinations can simply be colors and shapes, or something mundane like a kitty.

Even if you do not have a lot of the signs I named here, everyone is different, and I still suggest that you see a psychiatrist if the voices continue and you are worried. Even if you don't think that you have schizophrenia, seeing a psychiatrist would be a good idea just to help with your auditory hallucinations, especially because things like this can get in the way of every day life.

my cousin has had this occuring for years.in his case,it comes and goes and he ignores it when it occurs.it might be a light form of schizophrenia, maybe something spiritual.i suggest you make an appointmnt with a psychiatrist.that can be expensive however.most psychiatrist's charge a fee of 80 to 100 dollars per visit or more/.i would suggest a psychologist or family therapist.the difference is that while a psychiatrist is also an MD as well as a psychologist and can issue prescriptions./a psychologist cannot write prescriptions but would probably be less expensive./most family therapists have enough studies under their belt to qualify as someone who can diagnose your condition.i mentioned what could be happening is of a spirtual nature.always go for the explainable first.unusual that you'd hear these voices but not be motivated to do anything but to maybe speak to them./but again i say..go for the explainable ..see a therapist of some kind/.sometimes family therapists will take on patients based on their patients' current financial status/.don't speak to or otherwise attempt to communicate with these voices. by communicating with them is telling the brain that these voices are real.your brain might respond in turn by handing out more voices and them even answering you.overall, attempting to communicate with them might trigger your brain doing bizarre things in return.ignore the voices until you see a doctor.hearing voices is common, just not normal./
make an appointment with a therapist, but don't stress out and don't hurry.just calmly make an appointment and you might even be asked by the receptionist as to the nature of the visit.in sucha case mention exactly what you posted here in yahoo answers/.i would hope you're not posting a prank question as this is a rather serious matter/.well really maybe i should be glad if it's a prank.the only thing you'd have to deal with then is immaturity.if you're serious, which from the tone of the question, looked authentic,i urge you take my advice.and good luck

It's a lot harder than you might think to talk about these kinds of issues. When I was seeing a doctor for this kind of thing, the voices would actually get worse. They would bother me/ not bother me as punishment/ reward for seeing or talking to people they didn't like or liked. It's always a good idea to get help though. It's a very delicate situation.

    • it doesn't mean your insane just because of this. I don't have these issues but just because you happen to, does not mean you are crazy. If you feel you need help, then get help though, if you start having serious issues with your life or you are having difficulties in dealing with it

Well, I would think that you have some form of Schizophrenia. If its not severe than consider yourself lucky. You should seek a help of a proffesional. One of my good friends is borderline Schizophrenic and described things similar to you before seeking help. When she smoked weed these voices would disapear also. It must have something to do with a chemical being released in the brain.

You should get that checked out dood. Youll thank yourself in the long run
