Scared of pool drains

Not bath tub drains, just pool drains. When I was a kid, I thought that I was going to be sucked into the drain and die, so I wouldn't even go in the deep end of the pool alone. Now that I'm older, I know that I'm clearly not going to get sucked into them, but I STILL feel scared when I go near them, I can't touch them, and when I imagine being stuck in the pool while it slowly drains, and being pulled towards the drain, I feel terrified. I can't swim alone because of this fear, and I hate being it in Marco Polo (and just half-assedly swim in circles in the shallow end when I'm it) because I'm scared of being near the drain and not being able to see it/not knowing I'm near it. I'm a very good swimmer, so that's not the problem (I'm one level away from being a lifeguard).

i am. ther was a girl at our high school pool who was swimming she was like 7 or 8 in the deep end after diving off the board and she swam by the drain and she got sucked in and held down at the bottom by it. its dark and hard to see on it so by the time anyone noticed, she had died... the drain is no longer in use and i hate going deep in the pool even near it but i am in PE LEaders which is r lifeguard class so i havta :/ i think its normal because of that and theyre just fricken scary

same exact thing as i felt when i was a child growing up. my entire childhood life iw as terrified because on the news (when i was a child) this kid got sucked down by it(because it cleans the water or takes out the dirt from the water-but it was on too strong of a power that day who ever turned it on) and this kid got sucked down and his/or her intestines got pulled out and the kid died cause he drowned too. it was horrid. ever since i saw that on the news i have had a fear of getting sucked down and dying from it.
Now that i am an adult i am okay with it but not 100%. i still hesitate to step on it or go more than 2 feet away from it. i still keep my distance from it. i flip out if i am anywhere a foot away from it.

that used to happen to me when i was a kid i have an under ground pool the pool drain is at the deep end which is 8ft deep i used to think the drain would suck me in or something to but i eventually got over the fear like my dad always says fear is only in the mind remember that. Good Luck as a lifeguard!

I think you need to talk to a qualified therapist, one who will respect your right to privacy. We can really help you. All you can get from us are sound bytes. You need to work through this. If I was afraid of drains, I wouldn't care but this will affect your performance on the job.
