Saying please

Do you think saying please after a request makes it sound more or less commanding?

To me it sounds like your making it harder for the other guy to say no. is it normal to think this?

  • It depends on the situation.

If I'm at a restaurant Please is a must in etiquette but if I'm with a friend I'd be outraged if he demanded I say please.

That would be grounds for immediate termination of friendship and even implementation of the Cold Shoulder.

I actually hate it a lot when people don't say please. So I try to say it whenever I can. It just sounds like you appreciate what the person is doing more if you do say it.

If you don't say please, you'll end up sounding rather contrite and rude, commanding if you will. I've worked years in customer service and saying please and thank you just comes naturally...so does apologizing for mistakes I never even did...is it normal to be too polite? Hehe.

Speak to others as you would want them to speak to you.

Saying please gives the option of saying no, at least with small children.

It's the expression on your face or the tone of your voice that counts more, nonetheless saying please does make it less commanding and more likely to be answered.
