Retarded people make me uncomfortable

Well... if it's mild and they're still all right socially, it doesn't bother me a lot. But I don't like people who are visibly retarded.. they really creep me out, the way they look and the way they act, and I can't help but feel like the money to keep them alive is just wasted (especially when there are starving children of normal intelligence...) Every time I hear of a retarded person acting violent or gross I hate them even more. But everyone else seems to be fine with them, so I feel like such a bad person... is it normal?

I agree with feeling uncomfortable being normal, as I think many people are when they see someone behaving in a way that is socially abnormal and/or don't understand what's going on.

The problem is when people start justifying those feelings of awkwardness and want to have them harmed, etc and then actually do something about it.

Me too, I do not see anything weird about it, once I saw a retard grab my mom and try to stick his tongue up her throat, now that is a good reason for fearing those guys and gals... Not their fault though, but I still feel uncomfortable as hell around them. They are not all the same, much like you and I too, but they have less impulse control (from my experience at least) And I prefer avoiding them.

I would say it is normal to be uncomfortable around mentally retarded people. It is very common in our society, simply due to lack of exposure. That does not excuse your "hate" for them. They are people just like you and me. I work with retarded people, I have met close to 80 of them and each and every single one of them is completely different. They each have just as much personality as anyone. They have the same hopes and dreams and fears as we do. Just because they were born with a genetic abnormality, didn't get enough oxygen at birth, suffered an accident, etc etc doesn't mean they should be marginalized. I am very very attached to the retarded people I work with, I count them among my good friends and look forward to seeing them. If you open the door to the idea that their dependence on society is a problem, you also open the door to abuse and neglect. We can't take away these people's humanity just because they're dependent on us. What right do you or anyone else have to decide who is worth life and who is not? The eugenics movement of the 19th century tried that, and it eventually led to the Holocaust. It wasn't just Jews that were killed in concentration camps, but also gays, gypsies, criminals, political dissenters, and yes, retarded people. These people need our help, refusing that not only takes away their humanity, but ours as well. Try getting to know one or two people with mental retardation. They can and will surprise you with how sincere, hilarious, and clever they can be.

Ive worked in the mental health field for almost 8 years and this is one thing I will say about Mentally Retarded (yes retarded is a real medical term) is keep them far far far away from your children!!!! 99.9% of the mentally retarded men ive worked with are Sexual Predators and or are sex offenders!!!! So please please keep an eye out for ur children!!!! It would make u sick to know that about half of them are not convicted of their crimes....so they are still out in the community. Watch your children.

There was a retarded kid (well, grown man - he was 20 ish back then) who used to hang out at this park across from his house all the time. He would walk around and bug the hell out of any kids he would see there. He said he wanted to be a dentist, and he would ask all the kids to see their teeth constantly. For those who would play along, he'd get real close and look into their mouths while shoving his hand down his pants and messing with himself. One time I witnessed him climb on top of an attractive teen girl, 15/16 at the time I think, who was laying on top of a picnic table .... he climbed on her and insisted on 'seeing her teeth' while he started jerking himself. The girl screamed and managed to run away from him. But nothing was done about it, same as all the other times.

Unfortunately, when they are allowed out and around others like that, they are like a dog in heat. His parents were very old, and so were all his siblings - so he was just allowed to roam freely at the park all day long with nobody watching him.

God that's sick. But from working in a gas station for three years, where I saw all kinds of severely disabled people just left to roam around who really should've been supervised, I'm not surprised.

I feel exactly the same way. A couple of days ago, I was in line for a sandwich. There was a retarded guy who was putting condiments on at the end, and he was really freaky looking. He had braces and really scary eyes and a really fucked up face. It makes me feel bad to say this, but I wanted to run away and puke. He tried to talk to the person in front of me and ended up spitting all over the place.

Well, you can always become a Scientologist too, that's more socially acceptable than being a Nazi. Just ask Tom Cruise.

  • Ahh someone with good knowlege :-) Yes, Hitler did have a plan for the retarded. It's just too sad it couldn't still be put into effect.

I totally agree I don't feel comfortable around retards either. And it IS a waste of money keeping them alive.

I think it's time to evacuate the retards and get Hitlers plan back into full force.

Wow I'm so shocked to see that so many people are agreeing with you!!! This is really sad and all of you are pathetic. Maybe if it was your child that you carried for 9 months you would feel like that money is being wasted you morons

Well... Hitler had a plan for the retarded. I believe he described them as "Lebensunwertes Leben" or "Life, unworthy of life." I believe that Hitler enacted The Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring, proclaimed on July 14, 1933 to realize this goal. He sterilized those that had given birth to those with such issues and had the children cremated. He would allegedly send back the ashes inside an envelope to the parents of those affected, but actually it was the remains of a cigar or cigarette in most cases.

Just one of those weird phobias, I suppose. Along the same lines as homophobia. I feel a little uncomfortable around them, too, sometimes. I would recommend just trying to be around them more if you can so that you get used to and come to terms with their disability. As long as you keep your feelings to yourself and don't target them for harassment or hate crimes then it's not that bad.

Mmmm... not normal to me. It is hard for me to understand why you would feel aversion toward folks who are special / handicapped...
Not trying to judge you by the way...
Why don't you try the following: try volunteering for a special kids group. spend time with them and get to know them more. This will chip your aversion, and will probably make you feel great about yourself.
    good luck !

I hate to admit it, but I am a little uncomfortable around mentally handicapped people, there is this woman that comes to the salon with her mentally handicapped son (he is an adult with the intelligence of a little child) anyway I was having my hair done and the "mentally challenged" man was talking to the lady who was doing my hair and he was really making me uncomfortable, I guess he can't be left at home because of the way he is, he probably can't be left alone but still I get a little uneasy around him.

I agree. Only because one of them tried to molest my best friend Natalie, (we were at the beach, for a school field trip) so the teachers started laughing while he was touching her boob, and jerking himself. He tried to take off the bottom of the bikini but they stopped him. He didn't even get in trouble! They just laughed and said, 'Don't do that again!' In a sweet voice. She was mentally tramatized and had to see a psychiatrist for 2 WHOLE YEARS! She moved and that mentally retarded guy tries to touch other girls but the teachers has separate classes.

  • i dont like it when people take advatange of somebody because they are retarded. i seen alot of it happen all he time. i see people exploit them take their money, fuck them out of their resorces, and suck he lives out of them . people dog them alot. Trying to use them for their own selfishmenss and not being concerned about their welfare. It jsut make me sick how alot of people just flat out misuse and abuse someone who has a mentaly disabilty.

  • That is a shame... How they treat the mentally retarded.
Anyone who persecutedisabled individuals, harassed them, or abuse them in any shape, form or fashii should have some legal consequences against them. the need to have these people start paying big fines and get prosecued. These people ou spit on and call retarded did not ask to come into this world. people should leave them alone.
