Regarding geeks and hipsters- are you a geek?

I'm a geek. Not a super one but I am one. I don't know but for some reason being a nerd is fashionable nowadays and I don't get why there are nerd posers? (Yeah mostly hipsters) So first I'll define a geek. A geek is someone who LOVES something no matter what. And they don't change who they are because someone tells them to. Believe me, a lot of people have wanted us to stop being geeks. But why should we stop doing what we love so people that don't give a shit about us can hate us less?

A few days ago a girl told me that she was a geek like me and that Alan Moore was her favorite. I tried to strike up a conversation with her about Swamp Thing or the Killing Joke but I got a dim "Well I just read the Watchmen, it's the only graphic novel I ever read" and then she proceeded to give me the why-the-hell-is-this-person-telling-me-about-comic-books stare.

Watchmen made Time's top 100 novels (Not graphic novels, NOVELS) it's safe to say it's the cream crop. That's like somebody saying they're a fan of westerns just because they liked The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

I just don't get it. I'm not a geek for the social life, respect, hot girls, or for any other of our many benefits. I'm a geek because I love what I love. And know people are calling themselves geeks even when they have no passion for anything and change constantly. I'm really bugged by the Urkel look because it's like these hipsters are telling me that all us geeks have suspenders, high pants, and ugly glasses.

Sorry about the rant. So I want to know about you intelligent folks at INN, are you a geek? And what kind? I myself fall into the comic books and animation category. And band geeks, you count too.

Hell yeah! I'm a super geek! 34
I'm a geek too 63
I'm a geek poser 8
I'm not a geek 15
Ugh! I would never be geek! 3
I am a nerdfigher 12
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I'm: a band geek, book geek, and history nerd.
Don't ask me the difference between geek and nerd. I don't know.
It's sad though. People think I'm hipster because I have actual wayfarer prescription glasses. I've had them for seven years! Ugh.
I hate when people wear those 3d movie glasses to look like a "hipster."
    So stupid.

I'm a HP nerd. I carry a wand at all times, which throws some people off because I don't seem like that type of person at all. I strongly believe in education and I'm a total grammar nazi. I might be a geek :D

    DFTBA!

I don't know if I am a geek or not or whatever. I just like what I FUCKING like. I like pokemon, a few animes, BUFFY, The Office, a few mangas, Monty Python, Drawing, Lady Gaga, Say Anything (The band, not the movie), ska music, stickers, painting... I have probably listed too many already. But anyways, if I can't join the special geek club because I don't meet the criteria it really doesn't matter to me. I enjoy people's company based on who they are not on what they like or how they define themselves. Example: I freaking hate the show GLEE and I hate Ponies. Many of my friends like both of those things, but they are still really cool people. It just doesn't matter.

  • Yeah...that pisses me off too when people do that. Another thing I hate is when someone says to me:

''Oh you can't be a nerd because you don't have braces/glasses etc. or talk dorky like a nerd in anyway!''

How the fuck does a nerd dress? I didn't know they had uniform!

I am a huge game fan. When I was like 3 I started playing playstation and from then...a nerd was born..

I love reading. If i like a book..it will not take long for me to finish it and I like science a lot and I honestly don't like math even though I'm quite good at it and get excited when I get something I thought was hard.

I have recently deemed myself as a huge psychology geek... :)

I am a band geek. 11 long years with my clarinet. 4 years of high school marching band, 3 years of unrequired participation at our local college band (while still in high school). 2 years of tutoring for middle schoolers. Even arranged a piece for my high school band to play the night of my last concert. Safe to say I love it.

  • I'm a bookworm and MMORPG kind of geek. I often am mistaken for a hipster because I am female, and I find it rather funny when a man questions my knowledge of a video game, book, movie and I know more than he does. :3

  • A little bit, because of my obsession with B movies and horror movies in general. I'm sort of like Randy from the Scream movies.

What is a hipster, by the way? I've seen it used an an insult on IIN over the past three months but the meaning hasn't filtered through to me yet.

I walk around with clothes and items from my favourite fandom, strange accessories I collected that I just thought looked cool that make people stare, I look like a goth, and I start dorking out every-time im with a group that's part of said fandom even though the show is a kids show. Does that count or no? I don't do it to make a statement I just do it since im so obsessed. Also people seem to think im annoying and creepy since I talk too much overanylyze pointless crap and talk about insects but I just am like this. Does that count as geeky?

    • A hipster is a person who likes something purely for the sake of it not being cool. The hipster will try to go to places you've never heard of. It's almost like hipsters have a competition between them and the world to see who's ahead of "trends." As soon as something they like starts being cool, they ditch it.

I greatly disagree with your definition of a hipster.. If you search the term online, it is one who DOES follow latest trends and fashions.
But then if you look on UrbanDict, it is defined partly as,
"a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter."
Of which I completely agree with. I am defined by my friends as a hipster and never have I been a conformist to todays society but nor have I tried to not follow it. I am who I am and don't avoid, or try to be something because I want to fit a certain term.

        • I don't see hipsters as intelligent people anymore than I can see the 1950's greasers as criminals. You're not stupid, but in the end the real geeks and nerds are the ones everybody's working for. The greasers weren't criminals and most bragged about their deeds. The pattern with subcultures: all of them talk.

As far as dabbling into pop culture hipsters tend to stick on the surface. They tend to appreciate music, but they normally listen to one genre and judge strongly when they have little background in music. As far as art goes hipsters normally don't know the difference between and additive and subtractive scale but are equally judgmental, the arts hipsters like also has a tendency of looking the same and completely unoriginal. But hey, I guess once one puts on non prescription glasses to seem more intelligent (like an illusion) they can't see far outside the hipster bubble. Hipster intelligence can basically be summed up as "I can read and I'm proud." Your knowledge of current events comes from the Daily Show.

The point that I'm trying to make is that hipsters are ALL TALK. And what was that other thing... they're nerd posers. You're NORMAL people pretending to be geeks. They're average people with an elitist attitude.

You can't get so definitive with a subculture definition. That is incredibly biased for one and also just completely blown out of proportion. That's like saying all black men carry guns. All hipsters are NOT all talk. I think it really depends on where you come from. They don't just listen to one type of music, I for one listen to just about every type of music. I don't judge people at all. I am very open minded and love new conversations and ideas. Also, Hipsters don't try to be geeks. I define them more as spiritual and more in touch with everything around them.
I really do hate using labels but when someone comes along trying to down one type of person because of their belief's on them, well shame on you.

            • Same as accusing black men carry guns? Hipsters are a subculture, not a race. And one thing a subculture is defined by is that they're a group of like minded people. I wasn't calling hipsters all talk I was calling subcultures in general all talk. That includes hipsters but don't think I single you out. Maybe it does depend on where I'm from because that is certainly my experience with hipsters. (I'm from North East Urbantopia) Hipsters don't try to be geek yet they take style tips from the worlds most famous geek in media, Steve Urkel?

Shame on me because now Hipsterism is a religion of spiritual people and my rants are a hate crime.

Grr! First I didn't like them based on someone else's definition. Now they sound like people I really do like (and resemble).

I guess this is the problem with labels and we should all take everyone at face value.

Aha! Thank you. They don't sound like the kind of people I'd like. If I'm ahead of a trend, I'll be trying to get other people into it too, so everyone can enjoy it. If it gets big, all the better!

You sound like me. Complete book/science/maths-head who couldn't get a foothold with chemistry. Then it clicked overnight and I suddenly understood it. I love it almost as much as physics now. But nothing will ever beat maths.

The beauty with it is you either get it or you don't, you can't waffle your way through like in an English essay. Although Maths is the best, just because once you have the basic rules you can keep applying them to solve literally anything :D

Hehe, this could have come out of my mouth. I feel exactly the same. My mum used to ask how I remembered all the laws and equations and stuff, but you have to remember virtually nothing. It all just flows from a very small set of axioms. :)
