Reality and dreams

I won't bore you with an extensive story, so here's the stuff.

I often dream about myself at a younger age (usually ranging from 5-13) and find it hard to decipher whether the memories of these dreams actually happened or they don't.

I know it probably isn't normal but can anyone tell my why it is that this happens?

I'm sure it is normal for many. I often believe something has occurred when it suddenly comes to me that is was in fact just a dream.

I wouldn't say it often occurs, but probably normal for many.

  • They may have happened. The brain, after all, stores memories from years back, and the brain never deletes important memories. I still have a photographic memory of the time when I was four and I lost my favourite teddy bear (OK, it was a hedgehog toy) in a shop and I was very upset, and the tears of joy when the staff recovered it.

Basically, the reason why the brain creates dreams is to reshuffle your thoughts to decide which ones to keep - and that's why there are a lot of moments in time which we forget, because the brain deletes them. If you dream about them, usually the brain is making decisions as whether to keep them or not. However, it is impossible to know because the brain combines thoughts and memories together to make obscure scenarios.

Here's a little tip: Want to dream about whatever you want? Right before you go to bed and when in bed just as you doze off, think about that thing very hard and usually you'll dream it.

But the answer is, you'll never really know...
