Is it normal to think the word "rape" is now massively overused?

Because it is! Nowadays people constantly substitute verbs with the word just because the word sounds "funny" because it has to do with sex. Examples:

"Ouch, ear rape!"
"She's can't sing, she's totally raping this song."
"Mmmm, this hot dog is raping my taste buds!"
"I can't stop raping the replay button."
"My childhood has just been raped..."

Now is rape funny? No, rape is as sick as a sin as murder is. I've had it with the word being relied on just for minor comic relief when there are dozens of other alternatives. If those thousand people actually witnessed rape - or at least knew how damaging it is, I bet they'd never use the word as a joke again.

So what do you all think? Is it normal that the word "rape" is being... raped?

    I agree with you. Using the word in supposedly humorous ways goes some way to diminishing it, and this must have some knock-on effect as to the meaning of it.

    I feel the exact same way. My friends use it to the max, and they also use words like fag. It really hurts cause my sister is gay, and they know it.

    The hot dog line was pretty funny, but i understand what you're saying. It's probably just another fad like "epic fail" which will eventually go away.

    "Ear rape" is certainly appropriate if you are referring to rap music.

    op i think lol is used to much does anyone agree also on youtube people saying shity chuck norris jokes or saying thumbs up or just writing something that they find funny in a video fml i hate that

    While I agree with MaskedGunman, I do agree with you too. Rape is a very serious crime of violation that will strip someone of their innocence.

    Bravo to whoever posted this. I completely agree with you. Rape is horrible, and is in no way funny... I doubt that the people who laugh at those jokes ever were raped, or would laugh at the actual thing.

    You're examples were terrible, i have never heard it used in a word choice like that. Anyway, yes, rape is overused, but so is so many other words. Gay, for example. "I'm going to kill you!" is another. And then, a word like "fuck" has so many incredibly different definitions depending on how it's used in the sentence it's mind boggling. Nonetheless, I don't see any harm in it. If someone seriously came up to you and said, "I was raped", I doubt you'd take it any less seriously just because it's a common word. People are so concerned about not "offending anyone". We need to get over ourselves.
