Random smells

Sometimes I smell random things. Like ranch doritos, lemons, oranges, sawdust, brownies...anything at all really that has a distinct smell. it just comes out of no where and that object doesn't appear to be anywhere in range. Is this like a smell hallucination or what? Is this normal or do other people have this as well?

Make a note of where you are when you smell these odors. Keep a journal. You may see a connection to the places you are and the smells.

It sounds like Dysosmia. Do you find the smells unpleasant? Any mental diseases in the family? Have you had a bad case of the flu when you where younger? It sounds like your olfactory system has become distorted.

I'd say so...sometimes I'll smell certain things when I reflect on memories, like the scent of lilacs when I think about when my childhood home (even when there are no lilacs in the area at all) or certain foods when I'm hungry.

....or it could just be a tumor.

    This may be the solution.
all your sences are interprited in the same area of the brain. your eyes ears nose tounge and nerve endings all send information to the brain and the brain turns that info into images sounds smells and tastes.
in alot of people the different sences get crossed in the brain the most common being smells greating images in the brain usualy asociated with memory. virtualy everyones tastes and smell conect in the brain thats why most foods taste like they smell. some times other more unorthodoxed sences cross. for example some people including kanye west transfer the sound of music into an image/images. there is a case of an english publican whos brain turns sounds into very tangeble tastes and sometimes he gets sick rom the taste of stale eggs from a commonly used word. you may have somthing similar sound or images may become taste. look it up i cant remamber the name of the condition im sure you can find it online.

Well, i must admit, i get that too, not a full smell. I think that i get it more when i think of something. I there is a smell in the air that even distinctly resembles another smell, i smell something...more like...well...i don't know, but still. I think that it if you are concerned about it, you should ask a doctor, but i gotta say that i think it is pretty normal

i knew some one who smoked who passed away many years ago, and in the house that he lived in ever since then no one has smoked since, and the smell of smoke is completely gone... but everyonce in a while it starts to smell like smoke. i've never experienced this, but from direct sources. we joke about it being the person's ghost/presence that carries that scent when they are around.

maybe a ghost that smells like lemons, and oranges, doritos, etc. is following you.

That happens to me on occasion, I'm pretty sure I don't have a brain tumor. At least for me, it's because I was thinking of a memory relevant to the smell.

My God! I get that too. An area of the footpath outside my house always smells like fried chicken. There is no chicken store in the area and I doubt people are frying chicken at 9 in the morning. Also the stairwell in my building has a new and interesting smell every day. Sometimes it is obviously someone's cooking, but the other day it was Strawberries. Always a good smell. Not like the building across the way. Their stairs smell terrible all the time. I'm so glad I live in A Block.

In fact, people with epilepsy report smelling strange and particular odors right before having a seizure event. Granted you didn't mention that and you have seizures but it was worth mentioning.

  • never heard of such a condition. As long as you smell good things then i suppose it isn't that bad to smell random things throughout the day.
